Före detta stortalanger som dalade, VM-vinnare, fängelsestraff, skadeproblem som förstörde. Historierna är oändliga om alla spelare som spelat ungdomsfotboll och blivit fostrade i Manchester United. Men de har alla en sak gemensamt: De har spelat fotboll i Manchester United. Det kan ingen ta ifrån dem.

Jag har gått igenom alla spelare som är födda 1985-2000 och som tagit på sig den röda tröjan och spelat minst en U18-match med klubben. Jag har intervjuat spelare och försökt få fram så mycket information som möjligt om varför det gick som det gick och hur det är att vara en Manchester United-spelare. Nu är det dags för spelarna födda 1987. 

 

 

Gerard Pique, första klubb: Barcelona. Manchester United (2004-2008) Senaste klubb: Barcelona (2008-)

Gerard Pique föddes i Barcelona. Han inledde också sin karriär i Barcelonas framgångsrika akademi La Masia. Pique startade som defensiv mittfältare och imponerade stort. Innan Pique hann skriva på något professionellt kontrakt med Barcelona kom Manchester United in och agerade. Pique skrev på Manchester United sommaren 2004. Pique debuterade i a-laget redan i oktober mot Crewe i en Ligacupmatch. Han fick dock känna av spelet i U18 och U23 också. I en FA Youth Cup-match mot Stoke i december 2004, som Manchester United förlorade med 1-0, åkte Pique på en skada redan efter 30 minuter efter en tuff duell. Välkommen till England, Gerard, och en decembermatch på en dålig gräsplan mot Stoke. Pique fick sedan mer och mer speltid i a-laget, innan han blev utlånad till Zaragoza i La Liga säsongen 2006/2007. Väl tillbaka började han på riktigt att konkurrera om en plats i Manchester Uniteds startelva. Han hade det dock tufft, då konkurrensen från Manchester Uniteds bästa mittlås genom tiderna var hård med Rio Ferdinand och Nemanja Vidic. Det fanns ett till problem för Pique, nämligen Jonny Evans som mer och mer imponerade i sina matcher i a-laget och dessutom var ett år yngre. Pique var bra, väldigt bra, men kändes aldrig riktigt hemma i England. Han var långsam och inte alltid resolut nog i duellerna, vilket ställde till med problem för honom. Totalt gjorde han 23 framträdanden i a-laget. Noterbart var att han gjorde två mål på tre matcher i Champions League säsongen 2007/2008. När Barcelona knackade på dörren igen, kändes det oundvikligt att han inte skulle flytta på sig. Manchester United hade Ferdinand, Vidic och dessutom Evans som kom fram. Även om Manchester United ville behålla honom, så var känslan att alla parter var ganska nöjda med hur det blev. Resten är som man brukar säga; historia. Pique har vunnit VM, EM, Champions League, La Liga, Copa del Ray, Premier League och har varit en av världens bästa mittbackar de senaste tio åren.

 

 

Giuseppe Rossi, första klubb: Clifton Stallions. Manchester United (2004-2007) Senaste klubb: Genoa (2017-2018)

Giuseppe Rossi föddes i Teaneck, strax utanför New Jersey. Han inledde sin spelarkarriär i Clifton Stallions. När Rossi var 12 flyttade han, med sin far, till Parma och Italien. Rossis föräldrar är italienare. När Rossi hunnit bli 17 år erbjöds han ett kontrakt av Manchester United. Likt Pique spelade Rossi i FA Youth Cup-förlusten mot Stoke. Han hade också, likt Pique, hunnit debutera för a-laget då. Rossi gjorde sin debut i Ligacupen hemma mot Crystal Palace 2004 och hann göra några fler framträdanden innan han blev utlånad till Newcastle. Det slutade inte väl, Rossi fick inte många chanser och passade inte in i deras spelsätt. Det blev bara ett mål för Newcastle. Lånet avbröts och Rossi gick till Parma istället, där gick det desto bättre och Rossi gjorde nio mål på 19 matcher. Han blev sedan under sommaren 2007 såld till Villarreal, något som ogillades starkt bland många Manchester United-anhängare. Rossi är än i dag en av de absolut bästa och mest talangfulla som spelat i klubbens akademi de senaste 20 åren. Det är få som varit så överlägsna, med sån fantastisk touch, kvickhet, spelförståelse och målsnitt. Han har sedan dess hållit en väldigt hög nivå, framför allt i Villarreal och Fiorentina men också bitvis i det italienska landslaget, men haft enorma skadeproblem och fått operera knäna fem (!) gånger. Rossi är 2019 klubblös, och har faktiskt tränat med Manchester United. Noterbart är att han satt på läktaren när Manchester Uniteds U23-lag spelade i andradivisionen, en fredag kväll i januari. Han uttalade sig nyligen om att han älskar fotboll för mycket för att ge upp. Vi får se om det stämmer.

 

 

Jami Puustinen, första klubb: FC Kasiysi. Manchester United: (2003-2006) Senaste klubb: FC Haka (2012-2013)

Jami Puustinen föddes i Esbo, som är Finlands näst största stad. Han inledde sin karriär som ung i FC Kasiysi. Men började tidigt spela för FC Espoo. Puustinen vsade på stora färdigheter och fick chansen att provträna med Manchester United under sommaren 2003. Han imponerade såpass mycket att han fick ett treårskontrakt med klubben i september. Jag fick tag på Jami som berättade öppet och ärligt om sin tid i Manchester United och vad han gör nu.

Du är den enda finska spelaren att representera Manchester United någonsin. Hur känns det?

Jag är extremt stolt över mig själv men på samma gång har jag nog inte riktigt förstått var jag har spelat. Det känns som en dagdröm när spelare som Ronaldo, Rooney och Keane är bedvid dig på daglig basis och det är fortfarande svårt att ta in det efter nästan 15 år.

Finland är ingen stor fotbollsnation. Hur kom Manchester United i kontakt med dig och hur utvecklades allting innan du skrev på?

I Finland spelade jag i tre olika åldersgrupper i landslaget när jag var 13-15 år. I min egen årsgrupp; 87, och också med 86:or och 85:or. Vid den åldern gick allting hur bra som helst och jag gjorde sex mål på fyra matcher under en internationell cup i Ballymena, Irland. Manchester United kontakde mina föräldrar och sa till dem att de ville att jag skulle provspela för United. I första veckan under provspelet hade vi en träningsmatch med reserverna, och jag gjorde ett hattrick i första halvleken och efter det sa reservtränaren till mig att gå och träffa Sir Alex Ferguson och prata om kontrakt med Manchester United. Jag förstod ingenting av vad Ferguson sa (på grund av hans skotska dialekt) förutom ”Vill du spela för United?” Jag var så chockad och överväldigad att jag inte kunde få fram något vettigt ord på något språk alls. Så jag svarade troligen något som var en mix mellan finska och engelska men lyckligtvis förstod Ferguson mitt mumlande rätt, som ett väldigt glatt och entusiastiskt JA!

Inte många unga fotbollsspelare från länder som Finland och Sverige vågar drömma om att bli en Manchester United-spelare. Trodde du alltid att du hade förmågan att spela för Manchester United och vad tror du skillnaden var mellan dig och dina lagkamrater i Finland?

När jag var yngre lärde min pappa och mamma mig att tro på mig själv och att njuta av det jag gör. I mina tidigare dagar tänkte jag inte riktigt på vad jag skulle bli, jag bara njöt av att spela fotboll. När jag växte upp och insåg att jag hade en chans att lyckas inom fotbollen, växte min dröm allt större. Men för att vara ärlig, jag vågade inte ens drömma om att spela för världens bästa fotbollslag! Det var en helt absurd tanke! Vad gjorde mig annorlunda? Det är en svår fråga, men jag tror att skillnaden var att jag alltid var villig att lägga ner extra jobb. Jag tränade alltid extra själv och försökte utveckla mig själv i varje aspekt (fart, styrka, teknik etc). Andra anledningar var troligen det att hela min familj är väldigt atletisk så jag har bra gener för det.

Vem var den bästa du någonsin spelade med i United?

Det måste vara the one and only Cristiano Ronaldo!!! Jag har aldrig någonsin sett en sådan spelare. Byggde upp sin teknik och fysiska bit outtröttligt dag efter dag. Han var och är en otrolig spelare. Hans kompetens och passion för fotboll var något jag aldrig hade sett förut. Han brydde sig inte om vad andra sa, han var helt och hållet koncentrerad och självsäker på sig själv och sitt jobb.

Och vem var den bästa spelaren som aldrig nådde sin potential?

Giuseppe Rossi, han som spelade bredvid mig för reserverna. Han var en fantastisk forward men han fick inte nog med stöttning för att slå sig in i a-laget. När jag lämnade så lämnade han för Villarreal och fick sitt genombrott där. Han var en bra vän till mig och jag är extremt glad för honom!

Vad kände du att du saknade för att ta det extra steget?

Mod. Saker blev så allvarliga att jag glömde att följa min dröm och njuta av fotbollen. Jag saknade också min familj och mina vänner i Finland, jag var bara 15-17 år gammal då.

När du tränade med a-laget, var det någon som var extra hjälpsam eller vänlig mot de yngre spelarna?

Jag skulle inte säga vänlig men det var några spelare som alltid guidade och gav tips till de yngre spelarna. Dessa spelare var Gary Neville och Roy Keane. De var kaptener i a-laget under denna tid och de tog oss under deras vingar.

Man hör alltid att den mentala biten är så viktig. Att spelarna som tränar hårdast nästan alltid når resultat. Är det din bild också, att de som vill mest också blir mest framgångsrika?

Din förberedelse att alltid jobba hårt dag efter dag är allting om du vill bli framgångsrik. Men det spelar ingen roll om du jobbar hårt om du inte är mentalt redo. Du måste ha viljan att bli bäst oavsett vad som krävs och vara redo att offra allting annat. Så om du har en stark karaktär men med bristfällig skicklighet kan det åtgärdas men om din mentala styrka inte är stark nog så spelar det ingen roll hur mycket du jobbar.

Hur var det att vara en utländsk spelare i Manchester United, spenderade du det mesta av tiden med andra utländska spelare? Och fick du mycket hjälp av personal i Manchester United med praktiska saker?

Uniteds stab hjälpte mig med alla problem jag hade, därför förtjänar de min uppskattning och tack för allt de gjorde för mig. Jag blev bra vän med min rumskamrat Lee Crockett och också med några utländska spelare som Giuseppe Rossi, Markus Neuymar, Floribert N'Galula och Gerard Pique. Vi stöttade varandra med allting och försökte hjälpa varandra att lyckas.

Kan du se några unga finska talanger som kan gå i dina fotspår och bli upplockad av Manchester United till exempel? Är det någon ung talang som du tror kan bli en internationell stjärna som Jari Litmanen?

Det finns flera unga talangfulla spelare i Finland som har chansen att bli en internationell fotbollsstjärna. Vi måste bara fortsätta supporta och guida dessa unga spelare den rätta vägen och vi som lärare och coacher måste vara redo att växa upp bredvid dem. Jag tror att många gränser måste brytas och många läxor att ta lärdom av men jag tror att vi är på rätt spår.

Vad tror du måste hända i Finland för att få en större fotbollskultur i landet?

Vi måste fokusera på lära, supporta och att få spelarna att växa. Vi måste ge dem bättre chanser att fokusera på fotboll och bli bättre spelare utan att glömma hur kul fotboll är. Lyckas vi med det så får vi bättre och mer intressanta spelare som kommer att höjda ligans nivå och publikens intresse. Vi måste också arbeta hårt på att höja blicken för finsk fotboll, klubbar och landslaget och också bli bättre på att marknadsföra lagen mer till befolkningen.

Du umgicks mycket med Giuseppe Rossi och Gerard Pique, hur var de som personer?

De var helt fantastiska och roliga killar. Båda var extremt professionella och dedikerade att bli så bra som de bara kan på fotboll. Dessutom var de bra vänner till mig, väldigt supportande och accepterande och de hjälpte mig alltid oavsett vad. Jag känner stor respekt och uppskattning för båda två.

Hur fick du reda på att du skulle lämna United eller var det ditt val?

Jag hade en diskussion med klubben om min situation och välmående och vi nådde ett gemensamt beslut om att jag skulle lämna klubben.

Hur var omklädningsrummet i ungdomslaget jämfört med a-laget?

Omklädningsrummen var exakt likadana. Vi skämtade runt och så. U18, U23 och a-laget var som en enda stor familj och vi drev med varandra hela tiden.

Hur var tävlingen i ungdomslagen, hjälpte spelarna varandra eller kände ni av konkurrensen om platserna och försökte endast lyckas själv?

Vi hjälpte alltid varandra och supportade varandra. Såklart kämpade vi om platserna i lagen och försökte nå a-laget men det påverkade aldrig våra personliga relationer. Vi kände att vi hade en bättre möjlighet att nå personliga framgångar om vi fortsatte att jobba tillsammans. Konkurrensen om platserna var alltid hårda men rättvisa! Ska tilläggas att vi var professionella så alla förstod att ingenting var personligt och alla försökte kämpa om sina platser.

Du nämnde Cristiano Ronaldo tidigare och hans träningsmetoder. Vad gjorde han annorlunda jämfört med andra spelare?

Enligt min åsikt, så gjorde han inga speciella övningar som var annorlunda jämfört med oss andra. Men hans driv, passion och arbetskapacitet var på en helt annan nivå. Han tränade och tränade outtröttligt dag efter dag. Han verkade aldrig bli trött och fortsatte bara. Hans fokus och professionalitet var helt otrolig, allting han gjorde var för att bli en bättre atlet och en mer komplett fotbollsspelare. En annan sak var att han alltid verkade glad och njöt av fotbollen och träningen. Så även om han tränade hårt i alla aspekter så verkade han alltid njuta av det. Han var otroligt entusiastisk om allt som hade med fotboll att göra.

Hur såg en dag hos Manchester United ut under din tid? Du gick i skolan?

En normal dag hade vi träningar. Träningarna var antingen båda på planen eller så var en morgonträning på planen och eftermiddagsträningen i gymmet. Beroende på perioden under säsongen (försäsong eller pågående säsong) tränade vi 5-7 dagar i veckan med laget. Och ja, vi var också tvungna att gå i skolan. Om jag minns rätt, på tisdagar var vi i skolan från 8.30-10 och på torsdagar från 8.30-12. Vi studerade engelska, idrottsvetenskap, näringsvetenskap och IT.

Var det någon tränare du kände var väldigt bra under din tid men som inte riktigt fick någon uppskattning från fans?

Inte direkt. Alla tränare, hela vägen från ungdomslagen till a-laget, var högt respekterade och uppmärksammade. Jag var enormt privilegierad som hade chansen att jobba och lära från dem.

Du lade ner proffskarriären ganska tidigt. Vad är dina tankar om det?

Det var det tuffaste beslutet i hela mitt liv. Min identitet var byggt starkt på fotboll och när jag tog beslutet att sluta var jag tvungen att bryta den identiteten och hitta en ny Jami. Jag var tvungen att ta reda på vem jag är och vad jag vill. Som tur var hade jag en stark uppbackning i min familj och vänner och jag hade också en passion att utmana mig själv vad gäller utbildning, så jag skiftade snabbt från fotboll till att nå en annan dröm vad gäller att utbilda mig.

Vad gör du i ditt liv just nu och har du några planer på att arbeta inom fotbollen i framtiden?

Just för tillfället fokuserar jag på min utbildning och min arbetskarriär. Jag studerar till civilingenjör på universitet i Tammerfors. Mina studier fokuseras på finans, bokföring och affärslag. På sidan om jobbar jag på ett farmaceutisk företag som heter Orion. Med finans, bokföring och styrenhet. Utöver det tränar jag fortfarande väldigt mycket och sport är fortfarande en stor del av mitt liv. Jag går till gymmet fyra till sex dagar i veckan. Jag älskar också att spela golf och tennis. Jag har inte spelat fotboll sedan jag slutade dock. Över 20 år av nära relation med fotboll så jag behövde bryta det så jag kunde processa allt. Beslutet att sluta med fotboll var väldigt svårt så det tog flera år efter att jag slutat att få ett mentalt slut på det. Men jag kommer definitivt att göra någon slags comeback en dag och börja spela för skoj skull med mina vänner på seniornivå. För några år sedan coachade jag också lite några forwards i FC Espoo. Men tyvärr, för min utbildning och mitt jobb, var jag tvungen att stå åt sidan med det. Men jag är fortfarande väldigt intresserad av att jobba med unga talangfulla spelare so jag kommer nog börja coacha igen inom en snar framtid. Kanske även när jag får egna barn.

 

 

Darron Gibson, första klubb: Institute. Manchester United: 2004-2012. Senaste klubb: Wigan (2018-)

Darron Gibson föddes i Derry, på Nordirland. Han inledde sin karriär i lokala klubben Institute men värvades till Manchester United 2004. Det gick snabbt bra för mittfältaren med det enorma skottet. Han fick a-lagsdebutera redan 2005 mot Barnet i Ligacupen. Gibson blev sedermera ordinarie i klubbens U23-lag och vann också Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year 2006 som klubbens bästa U18-spelare. Gibson lånades sedan ut till Royal Antwerp i Belgien. Säsongen efter lånades han ut till Wolverhampton istället, där han mestadels var ordinarie. Han gjorde 21 matcher och ett mål där. Gibson var en av de bästa i Manchester Uniteds akademi och det fanns stora förhoppningar på honom. Kraftfull, med ett bra skott och en säker passningsspelare stack han ut. Han klarade den fysiska biten galant. Gibson blev lite av en Fletcher i Manchester Uniteds a-lag, fick en del kritik från supportrar men hade ofta Fergusons förtroende. Värt att nämna är att Gibson gjorde mål i en Champions League-kvartsfinal mot Bayern München och även i en semifinal mot Schalke 04. Efter 60 matcher och tio mål i klubbens a-lag gick hans resa vidare 2012 till Everton. Där stannade han i fem år innan han gick vidare till Sunderland och numera är Gibson i Wigan. De senaste åren har Gibson dragits med stora skadeproblem och han har haft svårt att få någon kontinuitet. Känslan är helt klart att han är på väg nedåt. Klart är i alla fall att Darron Gibson snart kan se tillbaka på en bra karriär för honom, med cirka 100 matcher i Premier League och en hel del spel på internationella scener för Irland (som han valde att spela landslagsfotboll för) och Manchester United.

 

 

Danny Simpson, första klubb: Parkwyddn JFC. Manchester United: (2003-2010) Senaste klubb: Leicester (2014-)

Danny Simpson föddes i Eccles som bara ligger några kilometer från centrala Manchester. Han spelade för Parkwyddn JFC som är en lokal klubb i Eccles innan han plockades upp av Manchester United. Högerbacken jobbade sig upp genom ungdomsakademin och fick vara med på a-lagets försäsongsturné men blev sedan utlånad. Först till Royal Antwerp och sedan till Sunderland. I Sunderland var han med och tog laget upp till Premier League igen. Säsongen 2007/2008 var han tillbaka i Manchester United och tävlingsdebuten kunde komma i en Ligacupmatch mot Coventry. Manchester United förlorade, överraskande, matchen med 2-0 på Old Trafford. Simpson fick dock nya chanser och bara en månad senare gjorde han Premier League-debut. Men sedan blev det inte så mycket mer än det, lån på lån där han bland annat spelade i Newcastle innan han lämnade permanent för just Newcastle 2010. Då hade han sammanlagt gjort åtta framträdanden för Manchester United. Den kvicke ytterbacken gjorde sedan över 100 matcher i norr innan han skrev på för Queens Park Rangers där det blev en säsong. Men det är i Leicester han kommer ha sina bästa minnen från, då han nämligen var med och ,sensationellt, vann Premier League 2015/2016 i vad som är den största skrällen i engelsk fotbollshistoria. Simpson spelar kvar i Leicester men får allt svårare att ta en plats i startelvan. Gissningsvis är han inte kvar där länge till, var hans karriär tar vägen återstår att se. Klart är att Simpson har en förmåga att vinna ligor då han vunnit ligor med Sunderland, Newcastle och Leicester.

 

 

Sean Evans, första klubb: Shrewsbury. Manchester United (2004-2008) Senaste klubb: Newtown (2016-2017)

Sean Evans föddes i Ludlow, en liten stad nära gränsen till Wales. Han inledde sin karriär i Shrewsbury som ligger i närheten. I början av 2004 började Evans provspela för Manchester United och i april blev det klart att han kommer skriva på ett kontrakt. Den talangfulle yttermittfältaren spelade mycket i ungdomslagen men hade svårt att blomma ut. Under sommaren 2008, efter ett antal misslyckade provspel med andra klubbar, skrev Evans på för Aberstwyth i walesiska Premier League. Där blev han dock inte långvarig och han testade sedan lyckan i flera engelska klubbar som ligger utanför seriesystemet, men lyckades aldrig etablera sig någonstans. Evans led dock mycket av att han bröt benet 2011, och blev tillsagd att han aldrig kommer kunna spela fotboll igen. Senast spelade han dock med Newtown i walesiska Premier League så sent som 2017 och det är i Wales han lyckats bäst. Totalt blev det kring 50 matcher i ligan med både Aberstwyth och Newtown, där det även blev Europa League-kval mot bland annat FC Köpenhamn med Newtown. I nuläget verkar inte Evans spela någon fotboll, men jag vet att han följer Manchester United och att han inte gillar Romelu Lukaku, enligt hans Twitterkonto. Överlag en karriär som inte gick som, vad jag tror, varken han eller vi supportrar hoppats på. Evans var kanske en chansning av Manchester United, men en chansning som inte gick hem.

 

 

Ryan Shawcross, första klubb: Buckley Town. Manchester United (2002-2008) Senaste klubb: Stoke City (2008-)

Ryan Shawcross föddes i Chester, nära gränsen till Wales. Han inledde sin karriär i Buckley Town och provspelade senare med Wrexham, men fick inget kontrakt där. Istället provspelade han med Manchester United under 2002 och imponerade såpass mycket att han fick ett kontrakt. Den fysiske mittbacken jobbade sig upp genom ungdomslagen och debuterade till slut för Manchester United i en Ligacupmatch mot Crewe 2006. Shawcross lånades sedan ut till Royal Antwerp, likt många andra. I augusti 2007 lånades han ut igen, den här gången till Stoke i The Championship där han imponerade. Stoke köpte också loss honom säsongen efter där det rapporterades om att Ferguson satte in en återköpsklausul. Shawcross har sedan dess spelat i Stoke, där höjdpunkterna varit spel i Europa League, FA-cup final och även uttagning i det engelska landslaget. Shawcross gjorde för övrigt sin enda och sista landskamp mot Sverige på Friends Arena när Zlatan gjorde hattrick. Ferguson har senare erkänt att det var ett misstag att sälja Shawcross till Stoke. Det må vara så, men jag tycker inte det varit någon jätteförlust. Shawcross har varit en bra och emellanåt en väldigt bra Premier League-spelare, men aldrig någon som hade gjort skillnad i Manchester United. Med det sagt har han haft en väldigt bra karriär, och är än i dag kvar och även lagkapten i Stoke. Över tio år i klubben nu och ligger topp 10 vad gäller mest framträdanden i klubbens historia.

 

 

Aaron Burns, första klubb: Manchester United (1995-2007). Senaste klubb: Stalybridge Celtic FC (2017-2018)

Aaron Burns föddes i Manchester. Han inledde sin karriär i Manchester United och kom till klubben som väldigt ung. En anfallare med ett bra målsnitt, där Burns bland annat vann skytteligan i klubbens U23-lag. Jag fick tag i Burns och han berättade om sin karriär och hans framtidsplaner.

Jag kommer ihåg att du var med och spelade en träningsmatch mot Manchester United 2008. Hur kändes det att möta United, även om det var reserverna? Jag kollade upp Uniteds laguppställning för den matchen: Tom Cleverley, Craig Cathcart, Fabio Da Silva, James Chester, Danny Drinkwater, Federico Macheda, Oliver Norwood, Robert Zieler etc... Kunde du se att några av dem skulle bli riktigt bra spelare?

Jag kommer ihåg den matchen tydligt. Det kändes konstigt för mig och nästan lite obekvämt. När jag ser tillbaka så njöt jag inte av tillfället. Att ha varit i Manchester United så länge så kände jag dessa spelare väl och alla har nått framgångsrika karriärer vilket är kul att se.

Du spelade med några av dem också, som Catchart och Cleverley. Du spelade också med Rossi, Pique, Heaton och Jonny Evans. Vem var den bästa spelaren du någonsin spelade med?

Rossi och Pique stack ut direkt, de kom in till vår trupp och omedelbart satte standarden i form av teknik och attityd som pushade oss andra att fortsätta sträva uppåt. Men skulle jag säga en, förutom de etablerade a-lagsspelarna, så definitivt Rossi.

Jag läste nyligen att inte en enda professionell manlig fotbollsspelare har kommit ut som gay. Varför tror du att det är så och kan du förstå det?

Även fast det är socialt accepterat att vara homosexuell tror jag att attityderna inom fotbollen är bakom normaliteten. Det resulterar sedan i att spelare inte öppnar upp sig förrän efter karriären för du vill inte att lagkamrater ska behandla dig annorlunda. Du vill alltid bara vara en av grabbarna i gänget.

Vad var din relation till Sir Alex Ferguson?

Alex Ferguson var en av de bästa ledarna någonsin och kanske uppskattade jag inte hans tränarstil helt förrän jag lämnade United. För att svara på din fråga var vår relation bra och jag var stolt att vara under hans handledning.

Vad kände du att du saknade för att ta det sista steget?

Efterklokhet är en underbar sak. Jag kunde alltid göra mål men kanske saknade jag den sista lilla snabbheten men också disciplinen det tar att nå den högsta nivån. Ser jag tillbaka skulle jag gjort massor av saker annorlunda men det kommer med mognaden.

Var det någon spelare du kände var väldigt bra men som aldrig riktigt lyckades?

United har ett rykte om sig att producera ungdomar och 70 % fick bra karriärer. Men den spelare jag kände verkligen skulle lyckas men som inte gjorde det var Floribert N'Galula.

Känner du att fotbollen har förändrats sedan du var ung? Och på vilket sätt? Om du ser till ungdomsspelare i dag jämfört med när du var det.

Pengarna har ändrats HAHA, men i ärlighetens namn har sporten utvecklats vad gäller idrottsvetenskap. Jag hade tur som var i Manchester United för coachningen och förberedelserna var före sin tid.

Jag såg på Instagram att du umgås lite med några före detta Unitedspelare men också spelare som Wes Morgan i Leicester. Det är fint att se det och min känsla är att United är väldigt bra på att ta hand om sina spelar, även när de lämnat men också att få dem att känna sig hemma. Skulle du hålla med om det?

Jag har fått livslånga vänner när jag var i Manchester United, som Frazier Campbell och Danny Simpson och vi pratar i princip varenda dag. Manchester United ger alla en bra grund och det har följt dessa spelare genom hela deras framgångsrika karriärer.

Hur ofta tränade du med a-laget och var det någon som var extra vänlig mot de yngre spelarna?

Jag hade turen att få träna med dem ett flertal gånger. Alla i ”Class of 92” var välkomnande för de förstod resan från ungdomslaget till a-laget. Även Wes Brown och Rio Ferdinand.

Följer du United nu och vad är dina tankar om dagens lag jämfört med det lag som var när du var i United) (När denna fråga ställdes var Mourinho fortfarande manager).

Jag tycker att nuvarande truppen är en lång väg från laget 2007/2008. Vinnarmentaliteten tycks inte finnas där i den här gruppen av spelare och spelstilen har förändrats totalt vilket är en besvikelse. Hoppas att de kan vända detta.

Hur skiljde sig ungdomsträningen jämfört med a-lagets?

Träningen skiljde sig med intensitet och kvaliteten på spelarna du hade omkring dig. Alla i ungdomslaget var bra spelare men dessa var världsklasspelare.

Jag läste att du, när du lämnade United, åkte till Island och spelade och sedan föll en flytt till Cardiff ihop och du kunde inte spela professionell fotboll på grund av någon regel? Så du började spela med FC United of Manchester...

Ja, min agent tog mig till isländska Premier League så snabbt jag lämnade United då de spelade över sommaren med en färdig deal med Cardiff när försäsongen började. Jag åkte till Cardiff som bestämt men de signerade Fowler och Hasselbaink den säsongen så möjligheterna i a-laget var begränsade så jag kom tillbaka till England och där var FC United det högst rankade laget jag hade tillåtelse att spela för innan januarifönstret öppnade.

Du provtränade med Leeds också?

Ja, jag och Jamie Mullan båda provspelade med Leeds men utan att lyckas. Det var hur som helst en annan fantastisk erfarenhet.

Du var med i en matchtrupp i Ligacupen. Det måste ha varit en fantastisk upplevelse?

Crewe borta var jag med på bänken. Jag ledde skytteligan i reserverna vid det tillfället och tippades att starta men jag var glad att bara vara involverad. Jag fick inte hoppa in då matchen blev tightare än förväntat men ändå en fantastisk erfarenhet.

Spelar du något just nu?

Jag spelar fortfarande utanför seriesystemet och har gjort så i åtta, nio år. Jag älskar fortfarande sporten och har gjort en del mål under min tid.

Vad känner du är den viktigaste egenskapen att ha för att lyckas på professionell nivå?

Attityd mot träning. Utveckling, dieten och att förbättra sig är viktigt. Du måste pusha dig varenda dag.

Har du något du ångrar eller något du känner att du skulle gjort annorlunda?

100 % om jag skulle fått möjligheten igen skulle jag gjort ett flertal saker annorlunda.

Vad gör du nu och har du några planer för framtiden?

Jag är en utvecklingschef för att lärlingsföretag och jag är också i gång med att starta ett företag med Fraizer Campbell som är ett unikt modeföretag kallat Scouted HQ. Watch this space.

 

 

Michael Lea, första klubb: Manchester United (2004-2008) Senaste klubb: Atherton Collieries (2016-)

Michael Lea föddes i Salford, precis utanför Manchester. En vänsterback som fungerade lika bra som mittback. Lea var framgångsrik i Manchester Uniteds ungdomslag och fick säsongen 2006/2007 äran att bli nominerad till Reserve Player of The Year, men där drog kamraten Kieran Lee det längsta strået och tog hem utmärkelsen. Han blev därefter utlånad till Royal Antwerp där han spenderade en säsong. Han kom sedermera tillbaka till Manchester United men var ingen spelare som klubben valde att satsa på och han lämnade utan att ha gjort någon a-lagsmatch. Lea hamnade istället i Scunthorpe där det endast blev en match på hela säsongen, en match i FA-cupen. Han hamnade istället i Chester City och har sedan dess fortsatt att spela på lägre nivå i England. Det senaste kring Lea är att han spelar i Atherton Collieries i den åttonde högsta divisionen.

 

 

Lee Crockett, första klubb: Yaxley FC. Manchester United: (2002-2007) Senaste klubb: Blackstones FC (2017-)

Lee Crockett föddes i Peterborough. Efter att först ha blivit ignorerad av Peterborough United som är stadens bästa lag provspelade han för Manchester United med framgång. Klubben valde att signera den 14-årige målvakten från Yaxley FC. Crockett hade dock tuff konkurrens i Manchester United, bland annat från Ron-Robert Zieler som var en stor tysk talang ni kommer få läsa om senare. Crockett hjälptes inte heller av att han åkte på en tuff skada tidigt i U18-karriären. Det blev inga matcher i a-laget för Crockett som 2007 blev släppt av Manchetser United. Crockett var en tid i Burys reservlag och spelade även för klubbar som Bedford Town i de lägre divisionerna i England. Han spelar just nu i Blackstones FC i den nionde högsta divisionen i England.

 

 

Fraizer Campbell, första klubb: Stile Common. Manchester United: (1997-2009) Senaste klubb: Hull City (2017-)

Fraizer Campbell föddes i Huddersfield. Han inledde sin karriär i del lokala klubbar men scoutade tidigt av Manchester United och spelade med klubben redan från 10 års ålder. Campbell är en snabb forward som snabbt växte in i U18- och U23-laget som en ledande spelare. Med sin fart och sina vassa avslut ansågs han vara en av klubbens mest spännande spelare. Campbell deltog i ett flertal träningsmatcher men debuterade först i en Ligacupmatch mot Coventry 2007. Han blev sedan utlånad till Hull City i The Championship efter att ha tidigare imponerat på lån i Royal Antwerp. Campbell var inflytelserik och bidrog starkt till att Hull nådde Premier League via kval. Men mest noterbart startade Fraizer Campbell för Manchester United i ligapremiären 2008 när han bildade anfallspar med Wayne Rooney. Om undertecknad minns rätt var han nära på att göra mål, i en match där United brände flera målchanser och som slutade 1-1. Campbell hade behövt ta den chansen, istället lånades han ut till Tottenham i den affär som fick Dimitar Berbatov att anlända till Manchester United. Det gick si och så för Campbell, som mestadels fick spela i mindre matcher för Tottenham. Det blev också slutet på hans Manchester United-karriär då han skrev på för Sunderland som då värvade en massa gamla Manchester United-spelare. Sedan dess har han spelat i Cardiff, Crystal Palace och han har sedan 2017 spelat i Hull i The Championship. Noterbart är också att Campbell har en landskamp för England, en träningslandskamp mot Nederländerna 2012. Totalt har han över 150 matcher i Premier League och över 100 matcher i The Champinship, så visst kan man säga att Campbell haft en bra karriär som ännu inte är över. Campbell har i skrivande stund en fin trend i Hull.

 

 

Floribert N'Galula, första klubb: Anderlecht. Manchester United (2003-2007) Senaste klubb: BX Brussels (2013-2015)

Floribert N'Galula föddes i Bryssel. Han inledde sin karriär i storklubben Anderlecht innan han upptäcktes av Manchester United. Det var då flera klubbar som var intresserade av den defensiva mittfältaren. N'Galula var högt rankad och inledde bra i Manchester United. N'Galula spelade mycket med ungdomslagen men a-lagsmatcherna lyste med sin frånvaro. Som bäst satt han två gånger på bänken 2006. Därför kom det inte som någon stor överraskning när han lämnade klubben 2007 för danska Randers. Det blev dock ingen särskilt lyckad tid i Danmark för belgaren, utan han fortsatte vidare i sin karriär och spelade bara några få matcher för klubbar som Sparta Rotterdam, DC United och sedan TPS i finska ligan. Det senaste kring N'Galula är att han spelade i BX Brussels 2013-2015. En klubb som Vincent Kompany är med och äger för övrigt. Vi kan lugnt säga att karriären inte gick som tänkt. N'Galula var högt rankad och namn som 'den nye Vieira' hördes, men han lyckades aldrig få någon riktig proffskarriär vilket är en stor besvikelse.

Lee Martin, första klubb: Wimbledon. Manchester United: (2003-2009) Senaste klubb: Exeter City (2018-)

Lee Martin föddes i Taunton, en stad i sydvästra England. Han inledde sin karriär i Wimbledon där han var väldigt högt ansedd och Manchester United lyckades locka till sig honom efter ett provspel med klubben. Martin är en högerytter/anfallare med bra arbetskapacitet och som dessutom lyckades kombinera det med fin teknik. Han debuterade i Ligacupen mot Barnet i en 4-1-vinst 2005. Sedan blev det två matcher till i a-laget med stor tidsskillnad, först 2007 mot Coventry i Ligacupen och sedan 2009 i säsongens sista match i Premier League borta mot Hull. Efter ett antal lån tidigare, i bland annat Rangers, Sheffield United, Stoke och Nottingham Forest lämnade han sedan för Ipswich kort efter Premier League-debuten. Martin var alltid en sådan som var ganska dominant i ungdomslagen och alldeles för bra för den nivån men som samtidigt inte riktigt lyckades nå a-laget. Istället har han representerat Millwall, Gillingham och nu Exeter. Han har sammanlagt gjort nästan 200 matcher i The Championship och över 100 stycken i League One och League Two. Man kan säga att han utvecklades till en klassisk Championship-spelare. Bra inställning, funktionell teknik och jobbade hårt men avsaknaden av spetsegenskaper blev hans fall. En duktig, mångsidig spelare.

Former wonder boys, world cup winners, prison time, injury problems. The stories are different and infinite about all the former youth players who got their footballing education at Manchester United. They have one thing in common, though. They are all youth products of Manchester United. No one can take that away from them.

I have gone through all players who are born in 1985 to 2000 and who have put on the beautiful red jersey at least in one U18-game. I have interviewed players and tried to get as much information as possible, on why and how it all ended up like this. Now it is time for players born in 1987. 

Gerard Pique, first club: Barcelona. Manchester United (2004-2008) Latest club: Barcelona (2008-)

Gerard Pique was born in Barcelona. He started his career there in their famous academy La Masia. Pique started as a holding midfielder and impressed greatly. Before he had the chance to sign a contract with Barcelona, Manchester United came in before their eyes and signed him. He signed in 2004 and Pique made his first-team debut as soon as October against Crewe in a League Cup game. He got the taste of youth football as well, where he played for the U18 and U23. In an FA Youth Cup game against Stoke in December 2004, which Manchester United lost 1-0, incurred Pique an injury after 30 minutes after a heavy clash. Welcome to England, Gerard, and a poor pitch against Stoke in December. Pique got more and more playing time for the first team before he was loaned out to Zaragoza in 2006/2007. Back in Manchester, he started to compete for a first-team spot. It was, however, not accessible due to Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic being Manchester United's most excellent center back pairing ever. Furthermore, it was another problem for Pique named Jonny Evans who impressed and also was a year younger. Pique was very good but never felt at home in England. He was quite slow, sometimes weak in duels which got him into trouble. Altogether he made 23 appearances for Manchester United. Notably, he scored two goals in three Champions League-games the season 2007/2008. When Barcelona knocked on the door again, it felt inevitable that he would go. Manchester United did have Ferdinand, Vidic and also Evans. Even though Manchester United wanted to keep Pique, there was a feeling that everyone was somewhat happy with the transfer. The rest is, as they say, history; Pique has won the Euros, World Cup, Champions League, La Liga, Copa del Ray, and Premier League and has been one of the best center backs for the last ten years.


Giuseppe Rossi, first club: Clifton Stallions. Manchester United (2004-2007) Latest club: Genoa (2017-2018)

Giuseppe Rossi was born in Teaneck, outside New Jersey. He started his career in Clifton Stallions. When Rossi was 12, he moved with his father to Parma and Italy. His parents are Italian born and bread. When Rossi had turned 17, he was offered a contract by Manchester United. Like Pique, Rossi played in the FA Youth Cup-loss against Stoke. He had, just like Pique did, managed to make his debut before that, in a League Cup game at home against Crystal Palace in 2004 and he made a couple of appearances before he went on loan to Newcastle. It did not end well, his chances were limited, and he scored only one goal in a team that did not suit his style of play. The loan was cut short, and he moved to Parma instead, where he scored nine goals in 19 appearances. Controversially, he was sold in 2007 to Villarreal where many supporters did not agree with that decision. Rossi is still one of the most talented players to play in Manchester United's academy in the last 20 years. Few have been that superior, with such a fantastic touch, agility, understanding of the game, and goalscoring ability. He has, since then, kept up his level; especially at Villarreal and also Fiorentina and the Italian national team. With that said, he has had enormous knee problems with five (!) times surgery on his knees. Rossi is now in 2019 without a club but has trained with Manchester United. Notably was that he, a cold Friday afternoon in January, was watching United's U23 team. He also said earlier that he loves football too much to give it up. We will see if that is the case.


Jami Puustinen, first club: FC Kasiysi. Manchester United: (2003-2006) Latest club: FC Haka (2012-2013)

Jami Puustinen was born in Espoo, which is Finland's second biggest city. He started his career as a young boy in FC Kasiysi but began to play for FC Espoo later. Puustinen showed plenty of ability and got the chance to have a trial with Manchester United during the summer of 2003. He impressed, so much that he was handed a three-year contract with the club in September. I got hold of Jami who gave an honest assessment on his time at Manchester United and what he is doing now.

You are the only Finnish player ever to be a Manchester United player. How does
that feel?

I’m extremely proud of myself but at the same time I think that I haven’t fully understood
that where I really have been playing. It still feels like a daydream where players like
Ronaldo, Rooney and Keane are next to you in daily bases and it’s still difficult to
understand it after almost 15 years.

Obviously, Finland is not a big footballing country. How did Manchester United
come in contact with you and how did everything progress before you signed?

In Finland, I played in three different age group national teams when I was 13-15. On my
own age group 87’s and also for the 86’s and 85’s. On that age my game was flying high
and everything was going great and when I scored 6 goals in 4 games on international
tournament in Ballymena in Ireland, Manchester United contacted my parents and told
them that they wanted me to go for a trial for United. At the first week of the trials we had a
friendly match with the reserves, and I scored a hattrick on the first half and after that the
reserve coach told me to go to see Sir Alex Ferguson and talk about the contract with
Manchester United. I didn’t understand anything what Ferguson said (because of his
Scottish accent) except that “Would you like to play for United?” I was so shocked and
overwhelmed that I couldn’t form any sensible words in any language. So I probably
answered something which was a mix of Finnish and English languages but luckily
Ferguson understood my mumble right, as an extremely happy and enthusiastic YES!

Not many young footballers from countries such as Finland and Sweden dare to
dream of becoming a Manchester United player. Did you always believe that you
had the ability to play for Manchester United and what do you think separated you
from your mates in Finland?

When I was younger my father and mother taught me to believe in myself and enjoy what
ever I do. On my early years I didn’t really think what I’ll become, I just enjoyed playing
football. When I grew older and I understood that I have a chance to succeed as a football
player, my dreams grew bigger. But to be fair, I didn’t even dare to dream of playing on the
world’s best football team! That was a totally absurd thought! What did make me different?
That’s a hard question, but I think the difference is that that I was always willing to do extra
work. I was always training on my own and trying to develop myself on every aspect
(speed, strength, skill etc.). Other reason was probably that my whole family is very
athletic so I have genes for athletic performance.

You obviously played with a lot of now great players, who was the best you ever
played with at United?

It has to be the one and only Cristiano Ronaldo!!! I have never seen such a player,
building his physics and skills tirelessly day after day. He was and is an unbelievable
player. His skillset and passion for football was something that I have never seen. He
didn’t care what others said, he was completely concentrated and self-confident on himself
and his work.

And who do you think was the best player but never reached their potential?

Giuseppe Rossi, the guy who played next to me on reserves. He was a brilliant forward but
he didn’t get enough support to break through to the first team. After I left he transferred to
Villa Real and made his break through there. He was my good friend and I’m extremely
happy for him!

What did you feel you were missing to take that extra step?

Courage. Things got so serious that I forgot to follow my own dreams and enjoy football.
Also I was missing my family and friends back in Finland, I was only 15-17 at the time.

When you practiced with the first team, was their someone who was extra friendly
to some of the younger players?

I wouldn’t say extra friendly but there were few players who were always guiding and
advising us younger players. These players were Gary Neville and Roy Keane. They were
the captains of the first team at the time and they took us under their wings.

You always hear that the mental bit is so important. That the players who train
hardest almost always get the results. Is that your picture, that the players who
wanted it the most succeeded more?

Your readiness to work and work day after day is everything if you want to succeed. But It
doesn’t matter how hard you work if you are not mentally prepared. You have to have the
will to be the best whatever it takes and to be ready to sacrifice everything else. So if you
have a strong character with defective skills it can be managed but if your mindset is not
strong enough it doesn’t matter how much work you do.

How was it as a foreign player in Manchester United, did you spend most of the
time with other foreigners in the team? And did you get a lot of help from staff at
Manchester United with practical things?

United’s staff helped me on every problem I had, therefore they deserve my gratitude and
thanks for everything they did for me. I became a great friends with my flat mate Lee
Crockett and also with my foreign friends Giuseppe Rossi, Markus Neumayer, Floribert
Ngalula and Gerard Pique. We supported each other on every turn and tried to help each
other to succeed.

Do you see any young Finnish talent who can walk in your footsteps by being
picked up by Manchester United for example? Is there any young talent you feel can
become an international star like Litmanen?

There are lots of talented young players in Finland who have the chance to become an international football star. We just need to keep supporting and guiding those young
players the right way and at the same time we as a teachers and

coaches need to be
ready to grow up along them. I think many boundaries needs to be broken and many
lessons needs to be learned but I think we are on the right path.

I read somewhere that you hung out a lot with Pique and Rossi. How were they as
persons?

They were absolutely brilliant and funny guys. Both of those guys were extremely
professional and determined to become the best they can be on football. Furthermore,
they were my good friends and were very supportive and understanding and they always
helped me no matter what. I feel a great respect and gratitude for them both.


How did you find out you were to leave United or did you make a choice?

I had a discussion with the club about my situation and well-being on the United and we
made a mutual agreement of my departure from the club.

How was the dressing room of a youth team compared to the first team?

The dressing rooms were exactly the same. We were pranking each other and making
jokes. Youths, reserves and the first team were like a big family and we kept messing with
each other on daily bases.

How was the competition in the youth teams, did the players help each other or did
you always feel a competition for spots trying to succeed on your own?

We always helped and supported each other. Obviously we were competing of the spots
on the youth and reserve teams and trying to break through to the first team squad but it
didn’t affect on our personal relationships. We felt like we had a better possibility to
succeed as an individual as well if we kept working together. The fight of the spots on the
teams was hard but always fair! In addition, we were professionals so everybody
understood that nothing was personal and everybody was just trying to fight for their spot
under the stars.

You mentioned Cristiano Ronaldo training methods earlier, what did
he do differently compared to other players?

In my opinion, he didn’t do any special exercises which would had been different
compared to what we others did but his drive, passion and work ethic was on another
level. He kept training and training tirelessly day after day. He never did seem to get tired
and he just kept going. His focus and professionalism was unbelievable, everything he did
was aimed to make him a better and more complete footballer and athlete. And another
remarkable thing was that he seemed always happy and enjoying football and training. So even though he was training hard on all areas he was always enjoying himself. He was
unbelievably enthusiastic about everything which was related to football.

How did a day at Manchester United look like during your time there? You did go
to school?

On the normal day we had two training sessions. Sessions were either both on the pitch or
morning session was on the pitch and afternoon session at the gym. Depending on the
period of the season (preseason or ongoing season) we trained 5-7 times per week with
the team. And yes we also had to go to school. If I remember right, on Tuesdays we went
to school in the morning from 8.30 to 10 and on Thursdays from 8.30 to 12. We studied
English, sport management, nutrition and IT.

What do you think needs to happen in Finland to get more of a football culture?

We really need to focus on teaching, supporting and growing our youth players. We need
to give them a better chances to focus on football and to become better players without
forgetting how fun the football is. If we do that we will get more skilled and interesting
players which will raise our national league’s level and interestingness for the public. We
also need to work hard to improve awareness of Finnish football, clubs and national team
and also to do a better job on marketing them more compellingly to the public.

Was there some youth coach whom you felt were great in your time at United but
did not really get the recognition from the public?

Not really. All coaches, all the way from youth teams to the first team, were highly
respected and recognized. I was extremely privileged to have a chance to work and learn
from them.

You quitted professional football rather early. What were your thoughts about
that?

It was the hardest decision of my life. My identity was built strongly on football and when I
made the decision to quit I had to brake my identity and build a new Jami. I had to figure
out who I am and what do I want. Fortunately, I had a strong support network which
composed of my family and friends and I also had a passion to challenge myself
educationally, so I quickly moved from football to pursue my educational dreams.

What are you doing in your life right now and do you have any plans to work in
football in your future?

At the moment I’m focusing on my education and building up my working career. I’m studying
business at the University of Tampere and I will graduate as a Master of science in economics and business administration on next year. My studies are focusing on finance, accounting and business law. Beside my studies I work in Finnish pharmaceutical corporation Orion’s financial accounting and controlling unit. In addition, as an ex-professional athlete, sports are still very big part of my life. I go to the gym or for a run regularly 4-6 times per week. I also love playing golf and tennis. I haven’t been playing football since I quit. Over 20 year close relationship with football had to be cut so that I had time to process everything. The decision to end my football career was extremely hard therefore it took several years even after I had finished to get mental closure for my career. However, I will definitely make a comeback to football fields one day and start playing for fun with my friends on senior football level. Few years ago, I also did some coaching of young forwards in FC Espoo, but unfortunately because of my education and work kept me so busy I had to step aside from coaching. Nevertheless, I’m still very interested of working with young talented players so probably I will start coaching again in near future. Perhaps at least then when I get children of my own.



Darron Gibson, first club: Institute. Manchester United: (2004-2012) Latest club: Wigan (2018-)

Darron Gibson was born in Derry, Northern Ireland. He started his career in the local club Institute but signed for Manchester United in 2004. It went fast for the midfielder with the fearsome shooting boot. Gibson made his first-team debut in 2005 against Barnet in the League Cup. He took a starting position in the clubs U23 team and was nominated for Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year in 2006 as the clubs best U18 player. He then went on loan to Royal Antwerp. The season after, he was sent on loan to Wolverhampton in The Championship where he scored one goal in 21 appearances. He was one of the brightest stars in Manchester United's youth academy, and there were high hopes for him. Robust with a great shot on him and a decent passer of the ball. He managed the physical bit excellent. Gibson was more or less the new Darren Fletcher, who got criticized by many fans but always had Ferguson's trust. Worth mentioning that Darron Gibson scored in a Champions League quarterfinal against Bayern Munchen and also in a semifinal against Schalke 04. After 60 games and ten goals, his journey continued with Everton as his next destination in 2012. He stayed in Liverpool for five years before he signed for Sunderland, and right now he plays for Wigan. For the last few seasons, he has had much trouble with injuries and therefore had some difficulties taking a regular spot in the team. The feeling is that Gibson is on his way down regarding his career. One thing is clear; he can look back on a successful career with almost 100 games in the Premier League and many caps for Ireland (where he choose to play his international football).


Danny Simpson, first club: Parkwyddn JFC. Manchester United: (2003-2010) Latest club: Leicester (2014-)

Danny Simpson was born in Eccles which is located only a few kilometers outside Manchester. He played for Parkwyddn JFC which is a local club in Eccles before Manchester United got their eyes on him. The right back worked his way through the ranks. He was selected to go to Manchester United's pre-season tour, and then he went out on loan to Royal Antwerp. He later played for Sunderland on loan as well where he contributed to Sunderland winning The Championship. 2007/2008 was Simpson back in Manchester and made his first-team debut against Coventry at Old Trafford in 2007. Manchester United lost, surprisingly, 2-0. Simpson got other chances, and one month later he made his Premier League debut. However, it only went so far. He was loaned to Newcastle and then signed for them on a permanent deal in 2010. Altogether he made eight appearances for Manchester United. The witty right back made over 100 matches in the north before he signed for Queens Park Rangers where he only made one season. However, it was with Leicester he made his mark och will remember for the rest of his life when he was part of the squad who won Premier League 2015/2016 in what can be seen as the biggest surprise in English football. Simpson is still with Leicester; however, he is currently out av favor in the team. It is quite possible that he will leave them soon though. Where his career is going after that is another matter. Say what you want about Simpson, but he has a fantastic capability to win league titles; he has won a league with Sunderland, Newcastle, and Leicester.

Sean Evans, first club: Shrewsbury. Manchester United (2004-2008) Latest club: Newtown (2016-2017)

Sean Evans was born in Ludlow, a small town near the Welsh border. He started his career in Shrewsbury who is located nearby. At the beginning of 2004, Evans went on trial at Manchester United and in April was all signed that Evans was going to represent Manchester United. The talented winger played a lot in the youth teams but had trouble expressing himself fully. In 2008, after several failed trials with clubs, he signed for Aberswyth in the Welsh Premier League. He did not stay for long, and later tried his success at some English clubs outside the league system but unsuccessfully. Evans did suffer a lot from a bad injury in 2011 when he broke his leg and was told that he is never going to play football again. The latest is that he played for Newtown in the Welsh Premier League in 2017 and it is in Wales that he has had most of his success. In total, he made 50 appearances in the Welsh Premier League, where he also played Europa League qualifying games against FC Copenhagen with Newtown. Right now, he does not seem to play any football at all. However, he seems to follow Manchester United and does not like Romelu Lukaku according to his Twitter account. Overall a career that did not go as planned. Perhaps Evans was a gamble by Manchester United, but a risk that did not bring the jackpot.

Ryan Shawcross, first club: Buckley Town. Manchester United (2002-2008) Latest club: Stoke City (2008-)

Ryan Shawcross was born in Chester, close to the border to Wales. He started his career in Buckley Town and later had a trial at Wrexham, but they did not rate him. Instead, he had a trial at Manchester United who saw his potential and signed him up in 2002. The powerful center back worked his way up the ranks at Manchester United and made his debut against Crewe in 2006. Shawcross then went on loan to Royal Antwerp, like several Manchester United players. In August 2007 Shawcross signed a loan deal with Stoke City in The Championship where he impressed. Stoke mad a bid for Shawcross that Manchester United accepted and Shawcross signed for them permanently. Rumour said that Ferguson put in a buy-back clause for him. Shawcross has since then played for Stoke, where his highlights have been playing Europa League, FA-cup final and playing for England. He made his only cap against Sweden at Friends Arena, where Zlatan scored a hattrick. Ferguson has later said that selling Shawcross was a mistake. It may be so, but to me, it is not a significant loss. Shawcross has been a good player, sometimes an excellent Premier League player. However, he is not someone who would have made a difference to Manchester United, especially not in that period. With that said have his career been very good, and still to this day, he is the captain in Stoke City. Over ten years in Stoke, and top 10 most appearances in the clubs history.

Aaron Burns, first club: Manchester United (1995-2007) Latest club: Stalybridge Celtic FC (2017-2018)

Aaron Burns was born in Manchester. He started his career in Manchester United and came to the club as a young boy. A striker with a good goal scoring record, where Burns among other things was the highest scorer in the clubs reserve team. I got hold of Burns who talked about his career and his future.


I remember you playing in a friendly against Manchester United in 2008. How did it feel to play against United, even if it was the Reserves? I looked up United's lineup for that game: Tom Cleverley, Craig Cathcart, Matty James, Fabio Da Silva, James Chester, Danny Drinkwater, Federico Macheda, Oliver Norwood, Robert Zieler, etc... Could you tell some of them would be very good players?

I remember this game well. It was strange for me and almost slightly awkward. Looking back I didn’t enjoy the encounter. Having been at Manchester United for so long, I knew these lads well, but all have gone on to have really successful careers which is nice.

You played with a few of them as well, like Cathcart. You also played with Rossi, Pique, Heaton and Jonny Evans. Who was the best player you ever played with?

Rossi and Pique stood out straight away, they come into our group and immediately set the standards in terms of technique and attitude that pushed the rest of us on to continue striving. But if I had to name one, apart from the first team players, so definitely Rossi.

I think I read recently that not one professional male footballer has come out as gay. Why do you think that is and can you, with your experience from locker rooms and a high level of football, understand that?

Even though it is socially acceptable to be gay I think that the attitudes within football is behind normality. That would then lead players to not open up until they were retired because you wouldn’t want your teammates treating them differently in that surrounding. You always just want to be one of the lads.

What was your relation to Sir Alex Ferguson?

Alex Ferguson was one of the greatest leaders of all time and maybe I didnt appreciate his management skill fully until I left united. To answer your question the relationship was good and I was proud to be under his tutorship

What did you feel you were missing to take that extra step?

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, I could always score goals but maybe I lacked a yard of pace and also the self discipline it took to make it at the highest level. Looking back I would have done a number of things differently but that comes with maturity

Was there some player you felt were very good but did not really succeed?

United have a reputation of developing youngsters and 70% went on to have good careers. However the one player that I felt was destined to make it and never did was floribert Ngalula

Do you feel that football has changed since your youth days? And in what ways? If you look at the youth players and players today compared to your time.

The money has changed HAHA, but in all fairness the game has moved on in terms of sports science but I was lucky to be at Manchester United because the coaching and preparation was ahead of its time.

I saw on your Instagram that you linked up with some old United players and some other professionals as well like Wes Morgan. It's great to see that, and my feeling is that United was and are really good at making their players feel at home and also to take care of the players when they left. Would you agree with that?

I made life long friends when I was at Manchester United, in Fraizer Campbell and Daniel Simpson and speak to those guys virtually on a daily basis. Manchester United gives everyone the correct grounding and that has followed those boys through their successful careers and stood them in good steed.

How often did you train with the first team and was there someone who was extra friendly against the younger players?

I was lucky enough to train with them numerous occasions. All the class of 92 was welcoming because they understood the journey along with Wes Brown and Rio Ferdinand.

Do you still follow United and what are your thoughts on today's team and maybe if you compare it to it when you were at United?

I think this current squad is a long way off the team of 2007/2008. The winning mentality doesn’t seem to be there within the group of players and the style of play has completely changed which is disappointing. Lets hope they can turn it around

How did the youth training differ from first-team training? Different exercises? A different number of daily practices?

The training changed due to the intensity and the quality of players you were surrounded by. Everyone in the youth team was a good player but these were world class players


I read something that, when you left United, you went to Iceland to play and then a move to Cardiff fell through so you couldn't play professional football due to some rule? And you went to FC United then...

Yes, my agent took me to the Icelandic premier league as soon as I left Man United as they played over the summer with a deal agreed in principle for me to sign for Cardiff when pre season started. I went to Cardiff as agreed but they signed Fowler and Hasslebaink that year and 1st team opportunities were limited so I came back to England and FC United was the highest ranking team I could play for until the jan window reopened.

You had a trial with Leeds as well?
Yes me and Jamie Mullan both went to Leeds but was unsuccessful on a trail. That was however another great experience.

You were in a matchday squad in a League Cup game. That must have been a fantastic experience?
Crewe away I was on the bench, I was top scorer in the reserves at the time and tipped to start but was just happy to be involved. I didn’t get on due to the game being tighter than expected but a great experience never the less

Do you play anything right now?
I am still playing in the English non league game and have done for 8/9 years. I still love the game and have scored a few goals in my time.

What do you feel is the most important skill to make it at a professional level?
Attitude towards training , development, diet and improving is a big factor. You need to push yourself every single day

Do you have any regrets or something that you feel you should have done differently?
100% given the opportunity again I would do multiple things differently

What do you do now and do you have any plans for the future?
I am a business development manager for an apprenticeship company and I’m in the process of starting a business with Fraizer Campbell which is a unique fashion discovery platform called Scouted HQ. Watch this space.



Michael Lea, first club: Manchester United (2004-2008) Latest club: Atherton Collieries (2016-)

Michael Lea was born in Salford right outside Manchester. A left back who worked as good as a center back. Lea was successful in Manchester United's youth teams and was nominated for Reserve Player of The Year but eventually lost out to Kieran Lee. He was then loaned out to Royal Antwerp, where he spent one season. Back in Manchester he was let go from the club, without making a single first-team appearance. Lea ended up in Scunthorpe where he only played once, one FA-cup game. Lea moved to Chester instead and have since continued to play at a lower level in England. The latest regarding Lea is that he is playing for Atherton Collieries in the eight division.

Lee Crockett, first club: Yaxley FC. Manchester United: (2002-2007) Latest club: Blackstones FC (2017-)

Lee Crocket was born in Peterborough. After being ignored by Peterborough United which is the towns biggest club he had a trial at Manchester United with a successful outcome. The club chose to sign the 14-year-old goalkeeper from Yaxley FC. Crockett did have a tough task at Manchester United with a lot of great goalkeepers, such as Ron-Robert Zieler whom you can read about later. Crockett was not helped by suffering a bad injury early in his U18-career. He did not play any games for Manchester United and was let go in 2007. He joined Bury's reserve team and played for clubs such as Bedford Town in the lower leagues in England. He plays for Blackstones FC in the ninth division in England.

Fraizer Campbell, first club: Stile Common. Manchester United: (1997-2009) Latest club: Hull City (2017-)

Fraizer Campbell was born in Huddersfield. He began his career in a few local clubs but was scouted by Manchester United at an early age and played for the club as a ten-year-old. Campbell is an extremely quick forward who grow in the U18- and U23 very fast as a leading player. With his speed and excellent finishing was he regarded as one of the most exciting players coming through his time. Campbell was involved in a few practice games but made his competitive first team debut against Coventry in 2007. He was later loaned to Hull City after having an impressive season at Royal Antwerp. Campbell was influential and contributed when Hull reached the Premier League via a playoff. Most notably, he started in Manchester United's season premiere where he formed a partnership with Wayne Rooney. If I remember correctly, Campbell was inches away from scoring in a game that ended 1-1. Campbell needed to take that chance, but instead, he was part of a deal where Dimitar Berbatov came to Manchester and Campbell was loaned out to Tottenham. He was mainly used in smaller games for Tottenham. It was the end of his Manchester United career, and he signed for Sunderland who bought several former Manchester United players. Since then, he has represented Cardiff, Crystal Palace and now Hull City again since 2017. Notably, he has one cap for England, a friendly game against the Netherlands in 2012. In total, he has over 150 Premier League games and over 100 games in The Championship. So you could easily claim that Campbell's career is a good one, a career that is not yet over. He currently has a good trend with Hull.

Floribert N'Galula, first club: Anderlecht. Manchester United (2003-2007) Latest club: BX Brussels (2013-2015)

Floribert N'Galula was born in Bruges. He started his career in the Belgium giants Anderlecht before Manchester United scouted him. It was several clubs who kept their eyes on the defensive midfielder. N'Galula was highly rated and started well in Manchester United. He played a lot with the youth teams, but his first-team chances were limited. At best he was on the bench twice in 2006. Therefore, it was not a great surprise when he left for the Danish side Randers in 2007. It was not a particularly auspicious time in Denmark. He continued his journey to Sparta Rotterdam, DC United and Finnish side TPS where he only played a few games for all the clubs. The latest regarding N'Galula is that he played for BX Brussels from 2013-2015. A club Vincent Kompany is part owner in by the way. We can easily claim that his career did not go as expected. He was highly rated, and names such as 'the new Vieira' could be heard, but he did not succeed at a professional level at all which of course is a disappointment.

Lee Martin, first club: Wimbledon. Manchester United: (2003-2009) Latest club: Exeter City (2018-)

Lee Martin was born in Taunton, a town in the southwest of England. He started his career in Wimbledon where he was seen as a great talent. Manchester United managed to attract him after a trial with the club. Martin is a winger/forward with excellent work rate which he managed to combine with proper technique. He made his first-team debut in a League Cup game against Barnet which ended 4-1 in 2005. He managed to play two more times for Manchester United, first in 2007 against Coventry and then 2009 in Manchester United's final Premier League game of the season away to Hull. After a couple of loan deals earlier, for Rangers, Sheffield United, Stoke and Nottingham Forest among others did he left shortly after his Premier League debut. He left the club for Ipswich. Martin was always dominant in the youth teams and was too good for that level but did not succeed at the first-team level at Manchester United. Instead, he has represented clubs such as Millwall, Gillingham and now Exeter. He has altogether made almost 200 games in The Championship and over 100 in League One and League Two. He developed into a classic Championship player. Right mentality, useful technique, and a hard worker but the absence of apparent ability to make a difference was his downfall. He was still a good, versatile player.
