Före detta stortalanger som dalade, VM-vinnare, fängelsestraff, skadeproblem som förstörde. Historierna är oändliga om alla spelare som spelat ungdomsfotboll och blivit fostrade i Manchester United. Men de har alla en sak gemensamt: De har spelat fotboll i Manchester United. Det kan ingen ta ifrån dem.
Jag har gått igenom alla spelare som är födda 1985-2000 och som tagit på sig den röda tröjan och spelat minst en U18-match med klubben. Jag har intervjuat spelare och försökt få fram så mycket information som möjligt om varför det gick som det gick och hur det är att vara en Manchester United-spelare.
Matt James, första klubb: Manchester United. Manchester United (2001-2012) Senaste klubb: Leicester (2012-)
Matthew James föddes i Bacup, en stad i Lancashire som ligger lite utanför Rochdale. Redan som ung anslöt han och hans yngre bror Reece till Manchester Uniteds akademi. Mittfältaren var tidigt lovande och redan som 14-åring fick han debutera i Uniteds U18-lag – osannolikt tidigt. James var högt aktad och blev regelbundet uttagen till olika ungdomslandslag i England. James, en bollsäker och passningsskicklig innermittfältare, var given under långa stunder på Uniteds mittfält både i U18 och Reservlaget. I maj 2009 blev den dåvarande 18-årigen uttagen till a-lagets matchtrupp i Premier League borta mot Hull City. James gjorde dock aldrig något inhopp i matchen. I februari 2010 lånades James ut till Preston i The Championship. Han gjorde faktiskt mål direkt i sin debut när han hoppade in mot Sheffield United. Han stannade resten av säsongen. Säsongen efter blev det återigen ett lån till Preston där han återigen fick rikt med speltid. Preston, som hade Darren Ferguson som tränare, hade ett flertal Unitedspelare på lån. Dock fick Sir Alex son sparken och James, med flera, återvände till United och lånen avbröts. Det blev dock inget Manchester United för James som istället, tillsammans med Ritchie de Laet, skrev på för Championshipklubben Leicester. Ett fantastiskt val skulle det visa sig. Trots enorma skadeproblem, vilket han även hade i United, fick James vara med i en titelvinnande trupp. Han missade förvisso hela säsongen med en skada, men tillhörde klubben. James är fortfarande kvar i Leicester, däremot är han för tillfället utlånad till Coventry. Det är ingen tvekan om att James hade satt större avtryck i Leicester om han inte haft så stora skadeproblem. Ändock har han gjort cirka 50 Premier League-matcher för klubben och sammanlagt över 100 matcher för klubben. Hade han inte haft så stora skadeproblem hade han satt större avtryck i Premier League. Nu kommer han få det svårt att få en Premier League-klubb igen, utan det blir sannolikt framtida spel i The Championship.
Scott Wootton, första klubb: Tranmere. Manchester United (2007-2013) Senaste klubb: Plymouth (2018-)
Scott Wootton föddes i Birkenhead, en stad lite utanför Liverpool. Han inledde sin karriär i Tranmere innan han som 13-åring skrev på för Liverpool. Lite kontroversiellt lämnade han Merseysideklubben två år efter och skrev istället på för Manchester United 2007. Mittbacken var ett tag lagkapten för Uniteds U18-lag. Säsongen 2010/2011 flyttade Wootton naturligt upp till klubbens Reservlag, där var han till och från lagkapten. Wootton var en ledartyp i försvaret, där han stack ut med sitt tuffa och resoluta spel. Förutom mittpositionen spelade Wootton en del som högerback också. Hans första lån kom redan i september 2010 när han lånades ut till moderklubben Tranmere under några månader. Säsongen efter lånades han sedan ut till Peterborough United i The Championship där han gjorde elva matcher innan United återkallade honom i januari. Istället lånades han ut till Nottingham Forest, där det blev 13 matcher. Wootton gjorde det bra i The Championship och skulle ta nästa steg i karriären. Han fick debutera för Manchester Uniteds a-lag i september 2012 i en Ligacupmatch mot Newcastle, men det tog inte stopp där utan några dagar senare debuterade han även i Champions League mot Cluj. Han fick sedan starta i Ligacupmatchen mot Chelsea på Stamford Bridge. United ledde med 4-3 när Wootton orsakade en straff på stopptid som Eden Hazard förvaltade. Chelsea vann sedan i förlängningen. Wootton stod för en svag insats, en insats som skulle visa sig bli den sista i Manchester United-tröjan. Wootton blev sedan utlånad till Peterborough igen, men under sommaren lade Leeds ett bud på £1M som United accepterade.
Wootton gjorde tre år i Leeds innan flyttlasset gick till Milton Keynes. Wootton, som tenderade att spela för synnerligen osympatiska klubbar, spenderade två år i MK Dons innan han lämnade 2018 för Plymouth, en klubb han fortfarande spelar för även om han är utlånad till Wigan för tillfället. Han har dock haft en del skadeproblem under åren. Det är tveksamt om den 29-årige Wootton når högre höjder än League One nu, men han kan åtminstone skryta om kring 100 matcher i The Championship, några matcher för Manchester United inklusive Champions League-spel. Wootton har dock inte gjort någon Premier League-match. Som landslagsman sträcker sig meriterna till några U17-landskamper. Allt som allt var hoppet högre för just Wootton som visade fina tendenser att kunna nå längre, men rent objektivt har han haft en bra karriär.
Federico Macheda, första klubb: Lazio. Manchester United (2007-2014) Senaste klubb: Panathinaikos (2018-)
Federico Macheda föddes i Rom. Han inledde sin karriär med Lazio men eftersom italienska klubbar inte kunde signera proffskontrakt med så unga spelare gav det Manchester United fritt utrymme att enkelt värva den 16-årige anfallaren. Han skrev på för United i september 2007. Redan tidigt stod det klart att Macheda var en målskytt av rang, i sin U18-debut gjorde han matchens enda mål mot Barnsley. Macheda hade en bra säsong, han vann den interna skytteligan i U18 och det blev även Reservlagsdebut för italienaren. Macheda, då endast 17 år, fortsatte att spela med U18 en hel del även om Reservlagsmatcherna blev fler och fler under säsongen 2008/2009. I den andra halvan av säsongen var Macheda bofast i Reservlaget och gjorde i princip mål varenda match med höjdpunkten den 30 mars 2009 då han gjorde ett hattrick mot Newcastle. Med det blev han belönad med en bänkplats i a-lagets viktiga Premier League-match mot Aston Villa i april. United hade ett flertal skador och behövde fylla på underifrån. Det var en dålig match från United och vid underläge 1-2 hemma mot Villa efter en timme byttes Macheda in istället för Nani. Ronaldo kvitterade på en indirekt frispark men matchen såg ut att sluta oavgjort innan bollen kom till Macheda, som vände och avslutade med ett skruvat skott i bortre hörnet. Jag har än i dag aldrig fått sådan gåshud som där och då. Det är ett av de mest minnesvärda målen i Manchester United de senaste 20 åren. Efter succén fick Macheda vara med på bänken mot Porto i Champions League, men då fick han inget inhopp. Det kom istället mot Sunderland när han gjorde mål efter bara några sekunder på planen då han, förvisso turligt, styrde in ett Michael Carrick-skott. Sensationellt nog gjorde han två mål och en assist på fyra framträdanden i Premier League säsongen 2008/2009. Det blev dessvärre ingen vidare succé för Macheda efter det. Han gjorde förvisso totalt 36 matcher för United, men endast fem mål totalt.
Jag följde Macheda noggrant i akademin och jag tycker han hade en fantastiskt bra fysik och kunde därför göra många mål på ungdomsnivå. Dessutom var han alltid en bra avslutare och hade näsa för mål. Han saknade dock egenskaper ute i spelet för att bli en Unitedspelare. Till exempel hade han ingen fantastisk touch, inte heller någon snabbhet att tala om. Därför var det naturligt att han lånades ut flera gånger från 2011 till 2014, där han bland annat spelade för Sampdoria, Queens Park Rangers, Stuttgart, Doncaster och Birmingham. Det vill säga, han testade på flera olika ligor och nivåer – men han satte inget avtryck i någon av klubbarna förutom i Birmingham där det gick bra för honom. Han lämnade United permanent 2014 och skrev på för Cardiff City i The Championship. Det blev två år och ingen smärre succé i Wales innan han lämnade för hemlandet och Novara. Efter två år i Italien – utan att sätta något stort avtryck – lämnade han för Panathinaikos i Grekland 2018 där han för närvarande spelar. Det har gått bättre i Grekland och känslan är att Macheda hittat rätt. Han får rikt med speltid och gör sina mål. Trots att det inte blev någon Unitedspelare har det gått bra för Macheda i karriären. Han har spelat på en stabil nivå och har allt från U16- till U21-landskamper för Italien. Han kommer alltid vara en kultspelare i United efter avgörandet mot Aston Villa som i princip säkrade ligatiteln till United. Federico Macheda kommer inte glömmas bort.
Reece Brown, första klubb: Fletcher Moss Rangers. Manchester United (2000-2013) Senaste klubb: Rochdale (2017-2018)
Reece Brown föddes i Manchester. Han inledde sin karriär i Fletcher Moss Rangers, en lokal klubb i Manchester vars många lovande karriär inletts. Han flyttade till Manchester United som 9-åring, vilket inte var helt onaturligt då hans äldre bror Wes Brown var en del av Uniteds a-lag. Likt sin bror kom Reece fram som en hård och pålitlig försvarare som kunde användas både som ytterback och mittback. Han var stabil, men stack aldrig ut som någon stor stjärna. Under 2010 blev han utlånad för första gången när Bradford lånade in honom på ett korttidslån. Han lånades sedan ut till flera klubbar, däribland Doncaster, Oldham, Coventry och Ipswich innan han slutligen lämnade Manchester United på fri transfer i slutet av säsongen 2012/2013. Han skrev på ett kontrakt med Watford, där han också snabbt blev utlånad. Det blev endast ett fåtal matcher för Watford i The Championship innan skrev på för Barnsley. Det blev dock ingen långvarig period där heller innan han gick vidare till Bury. Efter det hann Brown även med sejourer i Sheffield United och Rochdale, innan han avslutade karriären säsongen 2017/2018, endast 26 år gammal. Totalt gjorde Reece nästan 100 matcher i League One och en del matcher i League Two och The Championship. Han har även en del U19- och U20-landskamper med England på meritlistan. Reece driver nu WB Academy tillsammans med hans bror Wes, det är akademi för barn i hopp om att utveckla unga fotbollsspelare. Fotbollskarriären gick i stå och Reece hittade istället en annan drivkraft; att hjälpa unga spelare att nå sin potential. Han har själv en ovärderlig erfarenhet där, även om karriären aldrig blev storartad för honom.
Nicky Ajose, första klubb: Manchester United. Manchester United (1999-2011) Senaste klubb: Exeter City (2019-)
Nicky Ajose föddes i Bury, lite utanför Manchester. Han inledde sin karriär i Manchester United. Han kom upp som en snabb och kraftfull yttermittfältare, som kunde ta sig förbi med både kraft och finess. Ju längre tiden gick, desto mer fick Ajose spela anfallare. Säsongen 09/10 och 10/11 var hans målsnitt i Uniteds reservlag imponerande, det kom således inte som någon överraskning när han var redo för större uppgifter och lånades ut till Bury i League Two. Han hade inga större problem att anpassa sig till nivån och stod för 13 mål och 6 assist på 28 matcher. Det var nog för att imponera Darren Ferguson, Sir Alex son, som var manager för Championshiplaget Peterborough United. Darren värvade honom permanent men det blev ingen succé. Efter några få matcher och några utlåningar senare hamnade Ajose i Leeds säsongen 2014/2015. Han startade de tre första matcherna i The Championship men blev sedan bortprioriterad. Han lånades sedermera ut till Crewe i League One där han gjorde bra ifrån sig. Det räckte för att Swindon skulle köpa honom, där blev det succé och han gjorde 25 mål på 40 matcher och hans 24 mål räckte till en andraplats i skytteligan i League One, endast slagen av Will Griggs. Han blev snabbt värvad av Charlton, också i League One, men även om han gjorde en del mål så upprepade han inte succén från fjolårssäsongen. Ajose blev utlånad några gånger innan han 2019 lämnade för Exeter där han mestadels fått agera inhoppare för League Two-laget. Det är föga troligt att han upprepar succén från säsongen 2015/2016, men han spelar fortsatt på en respektabel nivå. Totalt har han över 200 matcher och över 60 mål i League One, medan han även har 55 matcher i League Two och fem i The Championship. Ajose kan även skriva in en del u-landskamper för England på meritlistan, men mycket mer än så kommer det förmodligen inte bli för den Buryfödde anfallaren. Det var tydligt att det inte skulle bli någon karriär i Manchester United, men jag är inte förvånad över att han gjorde sig ett namn i de lägre divisionerna.
Conor Devlin, första klubb: Greenisland Boys FC. Manchester United (2008-2011) Senaste klubb: Larne FC (2018-)
Conor Devlin föddes i Belfast. Likt flera före detta Unitedspelare – som bröderna Evans och även Cathcart – inledde han i Greenisland Boys. Han värvades sedan av Manchester United som 16-åring. Devlin var ofta reserv, men säsongen 2010/2011 var han ordinarie i Manchester Uniteds reservlag. Han stod för nio matcher och tre hållna nollor. Han lånades sedan ut till Hartlepool i League One för att få erfarenhet, det blev dock ingen match där och Devlin satt endast på bänken i en rad olika matcher. Han blev sedan släppt av Manchester United och anslöt till Brentfords trupp. Det blev dessvärre ingen match för Devlin som endast fick sitta på bänken. Efter en tung säsong flyttade Conor hem till Nordirland där han fick chansen av Cliftonville där han fick ordning sin karriär. Han har sedan även spelat för Larne FC där han för närvarande är sedan 2018. Devlin har haft flera lyckosamma år på Nordirland där flera titlar vunnits av målvakten. Han hade några tunga säsonger innan han fick ordning på sin karriär, men Devlin spelar just nu bättre än någonsin. Om än på en relativt låg nivå. Devlin har ett flertal u-landskamper men lyckades inte förvalta det förtroendet och ta steget upp i a-laget.
Chris Curran, första klubb: Ballinamard United. Manchester United (2006-2009) Senaste klubb: Cliftonville (2013-)
Chris Curran föddes i Swanlinbar, Irland. Han inledde sin karriär i Ballinamallard. Det var inte förrän Curran var 14 år som han började spela organiserad fotboll. Större klubbar fick snabbt upp ögonen för mittfältaren som provspelade med Newcastle och West Ham innan han skrev på för Manchester United i januari 2006. Curran spelade en hel del U18-fotboll men steget upp till Reservlagsfotboll blev det inget av i Manchester United. Han hade det överlag tufft i England. Manchester United släppte honom på fri transfer 2009 och han skrev på för Portadown i den nordirländska ligan. Där blev det dock endast en match för mittfältaren. Han skrev sedan på för Ballinamard United där han också inledde sin karriär. Väl där blev det två säsonger innan han skrev på för Cliftonville FC i samma liga. Sedan 2013 har Curran, som förutom innermittfält kan spela yttermittfältare, spelat för topplaget som vann ligan under hans första säsong. Curran har i efterhand talar om sin tuffa tid i Manchester United och likt många nordirländare, bland annat George Best, led han av hemlängtan tidigt. Curran kom också från en väldigt liten ort, vilket gjorde omställningen svårare. Totalt har Chris Curran gjort över 250 matcher och en hel del mål samt assist för Cliftonville och har etablerat sig som en riktig trotjänare i klubben samtidigt som han också utbildat sig på universitet där han läste Business Management. Någon stor fotbollskarriär fick han aldrig, men åtminstone en bra karriär i hemlandet samtidigt som han har en bra utbildning.
Davide Petrucci, första klubb: Roma. Manchester United (2008-2014) Senaste klubb: Cosenza (2020-)
Davide Petrucci föddes i Rom. Han inledde sin karriär i AS Roma där han kom fram som en av klubbens mest intressanta spelare. Petrucci gjorde 14 mål på 19 matcher innan han anslöt till Manchester United sommaren 2008. Italienaren kom fram som en offensiv mittfältare med ett imponerande målfacit och det sved ordentligt för Roma att de inte kunde behålla honom. Petrucci hade det inte särskilt tufft i Manchester United inledningsvis, utan han satte stort avtryck med sin teknik och sin fina högerfot. En sak som oroade dock: skadorna. Davide var oerhört skadebenägen, och hade heller ingen stark fysik. Han var dock inte lagets mest lysande stjärna, som man kanske hade förväntat sig på förhand även om han var bra. Han var dock lagkapten under en period säsongen 2011/2011 i Reservlaget. Under säsongen 2012/2013 kom mittfältarens första lån när han anslöt till Peterborough i The Championship i januari där han gjorde ett mål på fyra matcher och hans skadeproblem gjorde sig påminda. Säsongen 2013/2014 var det dags för Petrucci att ta klivet på riktigt, men hans utlåning till Royal Antwerp i Belgien blev inte lyckat och han gjorde endast ett mål på tolv matcher och United återkallade honom. Han lånades istället ut till Championshiplaget Charlton. Väl där blev det ingen succé heller. Under 2014 lämnade han Manchester United och skrev på för Cluj i Rumänien. Det blev två säsonger i Rumänien, där han var ordinarie, innan han lämnade för Caykur Rizespor i Turkiet. Han gjorde två säsonger i Turkiet, där han även led av sina skador. Han flyttade istället hem till Italien för första gången och till Serie B-klubben Ascoli. Han slog sig in i startelvan men satte inget stort avtryck och lämnade efter endast en säsong för Cosenza i samma serie där han nu spelar. Petrucci har tagit en ordinarie tröja och gör bra ifrån sig. Vid 29 års ålder har han erfarenheter av spel i högstaligorna i Rumänien och Turkiet, medan han har erfarenhet från näst högsta ligorna i Italien och England. Frågan är om han någonsin får sin Serie A-match? Även om han inte har någon dålig karriär var förhoppningarna större på Davide Petrucci, men han levde aldrig upp till det. Mycket på grund av skadorna, men förstås även att den maximala utvecklingen aldrig skedde.
Evandro Brandao, första klubb: Blackburn Rovers. Manchester United (2006-2009) Senaste klubb: Maccabi Petah Tikva (2019-)
Evandro Brandao föddes i Luanda, Angola. Han levde sina första år i Portugal dock innan han flyttade till England när han var nio år. Brandao inledde sin karriär i Blackburn Rovers innan han flyttade till Walsall där han fick träna med a-laget som 14-åring. Manchester United och framför allt den dåvarande assisterande tränaren Carlos Quieroz var imponerad och tog över honom när han var 15 år. Han blev dock inte spelklar förrän han var 16 år och den fysiske anfallaren hade inga problem att anpassa sig. Han stod för fyra mål på 18 framträdanden i U18 och spelade en del som yttermittfältare också. Brandao var dock ingen stor målskytt, vilket blev hans fall. Brandao hann dock debutera för Reservlaget men mycket mer än så blev det inte. När hans kontrakt gick ut sommaren 2009 lämnade han klubben och skrev på för Braga i Portugal, men Benfica lade sig i affären och snodde åt sig honom i sista stund. Succén uteblev dock i Benfica och efter några utlåningar lämnade han två år senare för Videoton i Ungern. Han gjorde dock bara ett mål på 14 matcher där och hans dåliga målfacit var ännu en stor anledning till att han lämnade kort därefter. Han har sedan dess spelat i Portugal och i Israel. Med en sak gemensamt: Inget vidare målfacit. Hans landslagskarriär har han i Angola, där hans facit är ett mål på två matcher. Han har dock ungdomslandskamper för Portugal. Sammanfattningsvis har han gjort över 100 matcher i den portugisiska andraligan och även en del i högstaligan. Brandao var hajpad men mycket tack vare en välutvecklad fysik tidigt. Sedan 2019 spelar han i högstaligan i Israel för Maccabi Petah Tikva där det blivit cirka 30 matcher hittills.
Cameron Stewart, första klubb: Fletcher Moss Rangers. Manchester United (2003-2011) Senaste klubb: Lincoln City (2017-2018)
Cameron Stewart föddes i Manchester. Han startade sin karriär, som så många andra före detta Manchester United-spelare, i Fletcher Moss Rangers. Vid tolv års ålder anslöt den kvicke yttermittfältaren till Manchester United. Han tog sig fram genom akademin och sågs som en intressant spelare för framtiden. Stewart var en meriterad spelare med u-landskamper för England. Framför allt var han en yttermittfältare som var bra på att utmana och komma till inlägg snarare än en stor målskytt. Stewart var ofta en nyckelfigur spelmässigt och skapade problem för motståndarna. Säsongen 2009/2010 var en nyckelsäsong för Stewart som var ordinarie i Reservlaget och trots den något blygsamma poängskaran 1+1 fick han chansen att åka med till Tyskland när a-laget hade stor skadekris i bortamötet med Wolfsburg. Stewart satt på bänken matchen igenom, men det faktum att han var uttagen sade mycket om hans potential. United vann matchen med 3-1 och Michael Owen gjorde hattrick. Cameron lånades sedan ut till Yeovil Town i League One där det endast blev några få matcher innan han lånades ut till Hull City i The Championship. I Hull gjorde Stewart fyra assist på 14 matcher innan de köpte loss honom permanent i januari 2011. Stewart hade dock otur i Hull och drog på sig flera svåra skador, bland annat en svår knäskada som höll honom borta från spel i nio månader. Efter tre år i Hull, och några utlåningar, lämnade han för Ipswich. Där blev han snabbt utlånad till både Barnsley och Doncaster. Efter att inte ha spelat en enda match för Ipswich lämnade han sedan 2017 för Lincoln i League One där det blev åtta matcher och två assist innan han lämnade klubben i slutet av säsongen. Cameron Stewart valde då att avsluta karriären, endast 28 år gammal. Delvis mycket på grund av att han hade två svåra knäskador, där han kände att han inte riktigt kom tillbaka. Det är synd för Stewart hade utan tvekan haft en bra karriär i The Championship om han inte skadat sig. Han var på väg att ha det i Hull. Sammanlagt har han gjort nästan 100 matcher i The Championship. 35 matcher i League One och några få i League Two. Han har även landskamper upp till U20 för England. Stewart började istället arbeta i reception som ger ut medicin, vilket gett honom mersmak för yrket och har nu drömmar om att en dag bli apotekare. Stewart blev aldrig någon Manchester United-stjärna, men han hade en bra – om än kort – karriär inom fotbollen. Förhoppningsvis kan den bli längre inom medicinen.
Oliver Norwood, första klubb: Manchester United. Manchester United (1998-2012) Senaste klubb: Sheffield United (2019-)
Oliver Norwood föddes i Burnley. Han inledde sin karriär i Manchester United redan vid sju års ålder. Innermittfältaren var en viktig kugge i Manchester Uniteds ungdomslag och en central spelare i laget, där han även var lagkapten under stunder. Under säsongen 2009/2010 var Norwood en av spelarna som fick följa med till Wolfsburg för Champions League-matchen, han var dock inte med i den slutgiltiga truppen utan fick sitta på läktaren. Säsongen efter blev han utlånad till Carlisle i League One för ett korttidslån. Han gjorde sex matcher innan han återvände till United. Säsongen 2010/2011 blev han utlånad till Scunthorpe men endast till januari. Han tog en ordinarie plats och sedan lånades han ut resten av säsongen till Coventry i The Championship där han även tog en ordinarie plats. Det gav Norwood mersmak, eftersom han nobbade Uniteds kontraktsförlängning och istället signerade han för Hudderfield i The Championship. Han spelade i Huddersfield i två säsonger innan han lämnade för Reading. Han har sedan dess hunnit spela för Brighton innan han 2019 lämnade för Sheffield United permanent, en klubb han var utlånad till redan 2018 och imponerade för. Hans aktier har sedan dess stärkts och Norwood, med 57 landskamper för Nordirland, var en nyckelfigur för laget när de överraskade och tog en imponerande nionde plats. Former wonder boys, world cup winners, prison time, injury problems. The stories are different and infinite about all the former youth players who got their footballing education at Manchester United. They have one thing in common, though. They are all youth products of Manchester United. No one can take that away from them.
I have gone through all players who are born in 1985 to 2000 and who have put on the beautiful red jersey at least in one U18-game. I have interviewed players and tried to get as much information as possible, on why and how it all ended up like this.
Matt James, first club: Manchester United. Manchester United (2001-2012) Latest club: Leicester (2012-)
Matt James was born in Bacup, a town in Lancashire outside Rochdale. He joined Manchester United as a young player together with his younger brother Reece. The midfielder showed early promise, and as a 14-year-old, he debuted for Manchester United U18. James was highly rated and was an enduring influence in the England youth teams. James, a great passer of the ball, was a regular in the United U18 and Reserve team. In May 2009 was the 18-year-old James was picked for the first team in their Premier League game away to Hull City. James was on the bench and never got on the pitch, though. In February 2010, James was sent on loan to Preston in The Championship. He scored on his debut when he was subbed on against Sheffield United. He stayed at Preston for the remainder of the season. He was, yet again, sent on loan to Preston the following season. He was a regular in their team, which Darren Ferguson coached. However, Darren Ferguson was sacked as manager, and Sir Alex recalled James, among other United players. By that time, Leicester City prepared a bid for James and Ritchie de Laet, an offer that Manchester United accepted from The Championship club. A great choice of club, as we would later find out. Although significant injury problems he had at United, too, James was involved in a title-winning squad. He missed the whole season through injury, but nonetheless. James is still at Leicester, although he is on loan at Coventry. I do not doubt that he had made a bigger impression at Leicester if not for the constant injuries. With that said, he has made almost 50 appearances for Leicester in the Premier League and altogether over 100 games for the club. He will find it challenging to find a new Premier League club, but he is likely to have a good career in The Championship.
Scott Wootton, first club: Tranmere. Manchester United (2007-2013) Latest club: Plymouth (2018-)
Scott Wootton was born in Birkenhead, a town outside Liverpool. He started his career at Tranmere before he, as a 13-year-old, signed for Liverpool. Controversially enough, he left the Merseyside club and signed for Manchester United two years later in 2007. The center back was captain for a while in United's U18 team. In the 2010/2011 season, he was moved up to the Reserve team, where he yet again – from time to time – was captain. Wootton was a leader at the back and was a committed center back. He also played a little as a right-back. His first loan came in 2010 when he returned to his parent club for a month. The season after, he was loaned out to Peterborough in The Championship, where he made eleven appearances before United recalled him in January. Instead, he signed for Nottingham Forest on loan, where he played 13 times. Wootton did well in The Championship and was ready for the next step; he debuted in September 2012 for Manchester United against Newcastle in the League Cup. He rode the scales and played against Cluj in the Champions League a few days later. His big test came when he started against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the League Cup.
The game ended 4-4, and Scott conceded a penalty in injury time for Eden Hazard to slot home. Chelsea won the game in extra time, and Woottan did not have a good game, the last one he ever did at Manchester United would it show. Wootton was sent on loan to Peterborough again, but Leeds made a bid for £1M, and United accepted the bid during the summer. He spent three years at Leeds before signing for MK Dons. Wootton, who tends to sign for unsympathetic clubs, spent two years in Milton Keynes before leaving for Plymouth in 2018 – a club he still plays for even though he is on loan at Wigan right now. He has had some injury troubles lately, though. It is doubtful that the 29yearold will reach higher than League One in the future, but he can brag about nearly 100 games in The Championship and a couple of games for Manchester United, including Champions League. However, he has never played in the Premier League. As a national career, his merits are a couple of U17 caps for England. His career is a bit of disappointment, but that is only because of the high hopes. Objectively, his career is a decent one.
Federico Macheda, first club: Lazio. Manchester United (2007-2014) Latest club: Panathinaikos (2018-)
Federico Macheda was born in Rome. He started his career at Lazio. Due to the fact that Italian clubs can not sign 16-year-olds on a contract, it allowed Manchester United to sign the striker. Macheda signed for Manchester United in September 2007. He showed early that he was a proven goalscorer, and in his debut, he scored the only goal in a U18 win against Barnsley. He had a good debut season and was the highest-scoring player in the U18 team. He also made his Reserve team debut. He continued to play with the U18 squad even though his Reserve team's appearances were more familiar in the 2008/2009 season. In the other half of the season, he was a starting man for the Reserve team and scored in every other game, with the highlight coming against Newcastle on Mars on the 30th when he scored a hattrick. With that, he was rewarded with a place on the first-team bench against Aston Villa in April. United had several injuries and needed to fill out the bench. It was a poor performance from Manchester United, and after 60 minutes and two-one down, Macheda was subbed on instead of Nani. Ronaldo equalized to 2-2 on an indirect free-kick, but the game seemed to end with a tie when the ball came to Macheda, who turned and placed it beautifully in the far corner. I have never, to this day, got such goosebumps for a goal in my whole life. It is one of the most memorable Manchester United goals in the last 20 years. After his success, he was on the bench against Porto in the Champions League, but he never got on the itch on that occasion. Instead, that came against Sunderland when he was subbed on and scored after only a few seconds when he, quite lucky; I might say, deflected in a shot from Michael Carrick. Impressively enough, he scored two goals and assisted in just four appearances for Manchester United in the 2008/2009 season. It was not a success in the long run. Unfortunately, he only managed to score five goals in 36 games for Manchester United.
I followed him closely at the academy, and I thought he had a fantastic physique and could therefore score a lot of goals at the youth level. Moreover, he had an eye for a goal and was a good finisher. On the other hand, he never had the all-round game to succeed at Manchester United. For example, his touch was not fantastic, and he was not particularly fast. It was not a surprise that he was loaned out to several clubs between 2011 and 2014 to Sampdoria, Queens Park Rangers, Stuttgart, Doncaster, and Birmingham. He tried different leagues and different countries – but he was unable to make any difference. With that said, he did have a good spell at Birmingham. He left Manchester United in 2014 and signed for Cardiff in The Championship. He stayed for two years and left Wales without success for his home country and Novara in 2016. He did not set the world on fire at Novara and instead joined Panathinaikos in Greece in 2018. He still plays for Panathinaikos, and the general feeling is that he has found his home. He is trusted and has scored a decent amount of goals. Even though he did not make it at United, he still has a good career. He has played at a decent level and has several caps for Italy U16-U21 teams. He will forever be remembered as a cult player after his winner against Aston Villa, which basically secured the league title. He will not be forgotten.
Reece Brown, first club: Fletcher Moss Rangers. Manchester United (2000-2013) Latest club: Rochdale (2017-2018)
Recce Brown was born in Manchester. He started his career at Fletcher Moss Rangers, a local club in Manchester where several good players have started. He joined Manchester United when he was nine years old, which was natural considered his older brother, Wes Brown, was at the club. Like his brother, he came up as a hard and no-nonsense defender who could play both right back and center back. He was dependable, but never the star. In 2010 he was sent on loan to Bradford for a short-term loan. He was later sent on loan to several clubs, amongst Doncaster, Oldham, Coventry, and Ipswich, before leaving Manchester United on a free transfer at the end of the 2012/2013 season. He signed for Watford, where he soon was sent on loan. He only made a few appearances for Watford in The Championship before he signed for Barnsley. He was not prolonged, and he later joined Bury. Brown had spells at Sheffield United and Rochdale before he finished his career in 2017/2018, only 26 years old. All in all, Reece played almost 100 times in League One and also a few in The Championship and League Two. He also has some youth caps for England U19 and U20. Brown now pursues WB Academy with his brother Wes. It is an academy to develop young footballers. His footballing career hit an end, and Reece needed to find another driving force in life; to help young players reach their potential. He has invaluable experience in that regard, even though his career never reached the heights he had hoped for.
Nicky Ajose, first club: Manchester United. Manchester United (1999-2011) Latest club: Exeter City (2019-)
Nicky Ajose was born in Bury. He started his career at Manchester United. He came up as a pacey and powerful winger who could beat his man with force and trickery. As time went on, the more chances did he get as a striker. In the season 2009/2010 and 2011/2012, his goalscoring record for the Reserve time was impressive. It was no surprise he was sent on loan to Bury in League Two. He had no trouble adapting to that level, and he scored 13 times and assisted to 6 goals during his 28 games. That was enough to impress Darren Ferguson, who was the manager of The Championship team Peterborough United. They signed him on a permanent deal. However, Ajose did little to impress at the club. After a couple of loan spells, Leeds was interested and signed him for the 2014/2015 season. He started the first three games in The Championship but was not prioritized after that. He was sent on loan to Crewe in League One, where he impressed. That was enough for Swindon Town to buy Ajose on a permanent deal. He scored 25 goals in 40 games and also was the second-best goalscorer in League One, only behind Will Griggs. After his success, Charlton bought him, and even though he had a decent time, he could not reach the heights he had at Swindon. After a few loan spells, Exter came knocking, and he signed for the League Two club in 2019, where he mostly has been a substitute. He will not likely ever achieve his goalscoring form from 2015/2016, but he still plays at a respectable level. In total, he has over 200 games in League One and over 60 goals to his name. He also has 55 games in League Two and five in The Championship. He can also note a few youth caps for England in his CV, but much more than that will it likely never be for the Bury born attacker. It was evident that he would not make it at Manchester United, but I am not surprised that he made a name for himself in the lower leagues.
Conor Devlin, first club: Greenisland Boys FC. Manchester United (2008-2011) Latest club: Larne FC (2018-)
Conor Devlin was born in Belfast. Like several ex-Manchester United players, like the Evans brothers and Craig Cathcart, he started his career at Greenisland Boys. He was signed to Manchester United as a 16-year-old. Devlin's was often the reserve keeper, but in 2010/2011, he was first-choice. He made nine appearances and kept three clean sheets. He was later sent on loan to Hartlepool in League One to gain experience. However, he did not play anything, and he was only on the bench as cover. Manchester United released him the season after, and he joined Brentford. He did not play for Brentford, and after a frustrating season, he moved home to Northern Ireland and moved to Cliftonville, where he got his career in order. He has, since then, played for Larne FC, where he still is since 2018. Devlin has several good seasons where he has won silverware. He had a couple of frustrating seasons before he found his feet in his home country. He is now playing his best football, nevertheless at a low level. Conor has several youth caps for Northern Ireland but did not manage to fight his way into the senior team.
Chris Curran, first club: Ballinamard United. Manchester United (2006-2009) Latest club: Cliftonville (2013-)
Chris Curran was born in Swanlibar, Ireland. He started his career at Ballinamallard. It was not before he was 14 when he began to play organized football. Bigger clubs had their eyes on the midfielder. He was on trial both at Newcastle and West Ham before signing for Manchester United in January 2006. Curran played a lot in the U18 team, but the step up to the Reserve team was too much for him, and he did not compete at that level. Manchester United let him go in 2009, and he signed for Portadown in the Northern Irish league. However, he did only play for them once. He later signed for his old team Ballinamard United. He spent two seasons at the club before he switched to Cliftonville FC. Since 2013, the central midfielder, who can also play on the wing, played for the top team who won the league during his first season. In hindsight, Chris has talked about his difficult time at Manchester United and, just like several other players from Northern Ireland, like George Best – spoke about his homesickness. Chris came from a tiny town, which made the adaption even harder. In total, Curran has over 250 games and plenty of goals and assists for Cliftonville and has established himself as a retainer for the club. He also has a degree from the university in Business Management. A great footballing career did he not manage to get, but at least a decent career in his home country and a good education.
Davide Petrucci, first club: Roma. Manchester United (2008-2014) Latest club: Cosenza (2020-)
Davide Petrucci was born in Rome. He started his career at AS Roma, where he came through as one of the most exciting players. Petrucci scored 14 goals in 19 games before he signed for Manchester United in the summer of 2008. The Italian came through as an attacking midfielder with a good goalscoring record, and Roma was not happy to let him go. With his great right foot and technique, Davide did not find it very difficult in Manchester initially. One thing that was worrying was his injuries. He was very injury prone, and his physique was not the greatest either. He was not the most shining star in the team either, which maybe was expected even though he was good. He was, however, captain for a while during the 2010/2011 season. During the 2012/2013 season, he was sent on loan for the first time, where he joined Peterborough in The Championship in January. He played four games and scored one goal. His injury record did remind us, though. The season 2013/2014 was his real chance on loan, but his time at Royal Antwerp was unsuccessful. He scored one goal in twelve games and was recalled. Instead, he was loaned to Charlton in The Championship – and yet again, he failed to make his mark. In 2014 he left Manchester United permanently and signed for Cluj in Romania. He stayed for two seasons, where he was the first choice, before moving on to Caykur Rizespor in Turkey. After two seasons in Turkey, where his injury troubles reminded him, he moved home to Italy for the first time since he left Rome. Petrucci signed for Ascoli in Serie B. He managed to fight his way into the starting eleven, but his contribution was rather blunt. After one season, he left for Cosenza in the same league, where he still plays and is doing good. Now 29, Davide has experience from Romania and Turkey's first division and the second-highest division in England and Italy. The question is, will he ever get into Serie A? Even though his career is far from poor, the hopes were higher for him. He did never live up to the early promise, much because of his injury troubles and because he could not maximize his potential.
Evandro Brandao, first club: Blackburn Rovers. Manchester United (2006-2009) Latest club: Maccabi Petah Tikva (2019-)
Evandro Brandao was born in Luanda, Angola. He lived his first years in Portugal, though before he moved to England when he was nine. Brandao started his career at Blackburn Rovers before moving to Walsall, where he trained with the first team as a 14-year-old. Manchester United and above all the former Manchester United assistant coach Carlos Quieroz was impressed and brought Brandao over when he was 15. He was, however, not able to play before he was 16. The strong attacker had no trouble acclimatize himself. He scored four goals in 18 appearances in U18 and played as a winger too. Brandao was not a great goalscorer, which was his downfall eventually. Brandao made his debut for the Reserve team, but much more than that was not to be. When his contract ran out in the summer of 2009, he left and signed for Braga in Portugal, but Benfica put their hands in the deal and signed him in front of Braga in the last second. His time at Benfica's was not a success, though, and after a couple of loans to other clubs, he eventually left after two years and signed for Videoton in Hungary. He only managed to score one goal in 14 appearances, and his poor goalscoring record continued. He has, since then, played in both Portugal and Israel. With one thing in common: a poor goalscoring record. His national team career has him at Angola, where he has one goal in two caps. However, he has youth caps for Portugal. In total, he has over 100 games in the second division in Portugal and a few in the first division. Brandao was highly rated, many thanks to a well-developed physique early. Since 2019, he plays in the Israelian highest division for Maccabi Petah Tikva, where he has around 30 games so far.
Cameron Stewart, first club: Fletcher Moss Rangers. Manchester United (2003-2011) Latest club: Lincoln City (2017-2018)
Cameron Stewart was born in Manchester. He started his career, like many other former Manchester United players, at Fletcher Moss Rangers. The skillful winger joined Manchester United as a 12-year-old. He came through the academy and was seen as an exciting prospect for the future. He was a merited player with experience from England youth teams. Above all, he was a winger with speed and good at reaching the shortline with crosses rather than a goalscoring winger. Stewart was often a key man and made it difficult for the opposition. The season 2009/2010 was a key season for Stewart, who was the first choice in the Reserve team, and even though one assist and one goal were not that impressive, he still was on the plane for Germany to meet Wolfsburg when the first team had an injury crisis. Cameron was on the bench the whole game, but the fact that he was on the bench said a lot about his potential. United won the game 3-1, and Michael Owen scored a hattrick.
Stewart was sent on loan to Yeovil Town in League One, where he only made a few games before he joined Hull City in The Championship on loan. Stewart had four assists in 14 games before Hull signed him on a permanent deal in January 2011. He was unlucky with injuries during his time and had a knee injury that held him back for nine months. After three years at Hull, and a few loans, he left the club and joined Ipswich, where he soon was loaned out to both Barnsley and Doncaster. He did not play a single time for Ipswich before he joined Lincoln in League One in 2017. He played eight games and assisted in two goals before leaving the club at the end of the season. He chose to end his career, merely 28 years of age. Partly because he had two difficult knee-injuries, where he never felt that he came back to 100%, it is a shame because Stewart would have had, without a doubt, a good career in The Championship. He was on his way to have that at Hull.
He played almost 100 games in The Championship, 35 games in League One, and a few in League Two. He has caps up to U20 for England as well. Stewart started to work as a prescription clerk, where he handles people’s repeat medication. He is hoping to one day become a pharmacist. He never became a Manchester United star, but he had a good – although short – footballing career. Hopefully, that can be longer in medicine.
Oliver Norwood, first club: Manchester United. Manchester United (1998-2012) Latest club: Sheffield United (2019-)
Oliver Norwood was born in Burnley. He started his career at Manchester United already as a 7-year-old. The central midfielder was an important player for the youth teams, where he also was a captain under periods. During the 2009/2010 season, Norwood was one of the players that traveled to Wolfsburg with the first team. He was, however, not involved in the final squad and saw the game from the stands. The season after, he was loaned out to Carlisle on a short term deal. He played six times before he returned to United. In the season 2010/2011, he was sent on loan to Scunthorpe, but only until January, where he switched to Coventry in The Championship, where he also was the first choice midfielder. That gave Oliver more taste for first-team football, and he rejected Manchester United's offer for a new contract and signed for Huddersfield in The Championship on a permanent deal. He played there for two seasons before he left for Reading. Since then, he had played for Brighton before leaving for Sheffield United in 2019, a club he was on loan to in 2018. His value has increased since Norwood, with 57 caps for Northern Ireland, was a key figure when Sheffield United surprisingly finished ninth in the Premier League. Norwood never made his debut at Manchester United, making him one of the best youth products never to make a first-team game. Norwood has over 50 Premier League games on his CV and almost 300 games in The Championship. He was brave when he turned down Manchester United, but it has almost certainly helped him in the long run.
